Freight emissions are quoted per tonne-kilometre: one tonne carried one kilometre. Multiply the shipped weight in tonnes by the distance in kilometres by the mode's emission factor.

- Rail freight — about 27

The catch is the weight you use. Carriers bill, and aircraft load, on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is volume divided by a published divisor. A parcel measuring 35 × 28 × 20 cm has a volume of 19,600 cm³, and at a divisor of 5,000 that is 3.92 kg of dimensional weight. If the contents weigh only 0.9 kg, the parcel travels as though it weighed 3.92 kg.
Calculating that shipment's footprint on 0.9 kg would understate it more than fourfold. Air, in particular, is capacity-constrained by volume as much as mass, which is exactly why the chargeable-weight rule exists.
