Everything hangs on chargeable weight. Carriers bill and aircraft load on the greater of actual and dimensional weight, so a light bulky parcel travels as though it were several times heavier — and a footprint calculated on the contents alone understates it by the same multiple. The last mile is broken out separately because a delivery van is roughly six times worse per tonne-kilometre than a full articulated truck, which makes it a small share of the distance and a large share of the emissions.

1Enter the actual weight of the contents and the outer dimensions of the box. The dimensional divisor is published by your carrier: 5,000 cm³ per kg is the common international figure, and US domestic services generally use 139 cubic inches per pound, which works out similarly.
2Mode is the biggest lever available. The same parcel by air emits roughly eight times what it does by ground, and that comparison excludes the non-CO2 warming effects of contrails, which make the real gap wider still.
3Box size is the most overlooked lever and it is free. Because the parcel travels on chargeable weight, shrinking an oversized box cuts both the transport emissions and the packaging emissions at once.

Quick Answer — How to Calculate Shipping Emissions

Freight emissions are quoted per tonne-kilometre: one tonne carried one kilometre. Multiply the shipped weight in tonnes by the distance in kilometres by the mode's emission factor.

The catch is the weight you use. Carriers bill, and aircraft load, on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is volume divided by a published divisor. A parcel measuring 35 × 28 × 20 cm has a volume of 19,600 cm³, and at a divisor of 5,000 that is 3.92 kg of dimensional weight. If the contents weigh only 0.9 kg, the parcel travels as though it weighed 3.92 kg.

Calculating that shipment's footprint on 0.9 kg would understate it more than fourfold. Air, in particular, is capacity-constrained by volume as much as mass, which is exactly why the chargeable-weight rule exists.

How to Use This Calculator: A Typical E-Commerce Parcel

Now the journey: 1,450 km by truck, then a 45 km last mile by van, with 0.18 kg of packaging at 1.1 kg CO2e per kg of material.

Two things stand out. The last mile is 10.8% of the footprint for 3% of the distance, because a van carrying a handful of parcels is nearly six times worse per tonne-kilometre than a full truck. And packaging is 19.4% of the total — more than the last mile, which is not where most people expect it to sit.

A Second Example: The Mode Comparison That Decides Everything

Send the identical parcel by air instead of ground and the line haul jumps from 0.624 kg to 6.837 kg. The total per shipment goes from 1.021 kg to 7.979 kg — nearly eight times — and the annual figure from 245 kg to 1,915 kg. Nothing about the parcel changed; only the aircraft did.

The calculator runs the same shipment through every mode at once. For that parcel over 1,450 km: sea 0.404 kg, rail 0.469 kg, truck 0.933 kg, long-haul air 3.697 kg, van 3.876 kg, short-haul air 7.145 kg. The spread between the best and worst option is a factor of nearly eighteen.

A heavier, denser shipment behaves differently. Take a 12 kg item in a 60 × 40 × 40 cm box travelling 9,200 km by sea with a 60 km last mile and 0.9 kg of packaging. Dimensional weight is 19.2 kg, so it is still billed on volume, but its density of 125 kg/m³ is far better. The line haul over that enormous distance produces only 2.959 kg, the last mile 0.724 kg, packaging 0.990 kg, giving 4.856 kg per shipment.

That comparison is worth sitting with: 9,200 km by sea produces less than five times the emissions of 1,450 km by air, for a parcel thirteen times heavier. Distance is almost irrelevant next to mode. Choosing ground over air matters far more than shortening a route, which is also the conclusion the food miles calculator reaches from the other direction.

What Actually Reduces a Shipping Footprint

Four levers, in rough order of how much they move the number.

Mode. Ground instead of air is the single largest change available, typically an 80% to 90% reduction on the line haul. Offering standard delivery as the default rather than expedited does more than any packaging change.

Box size. Because the parcel is charged on the greater of actual and dimensional weight, shrinking the box reduces both the cost and the emissions of a light shipment. Getting the example parcel from 3.92 kg dimensional down to its 0.9 kg actual weight would cut the transport emissions to under a quarter. This is the lever most often ignored, and it is free.

Returns. A 12% return rate added 9% to the per-shipment footprint in the worked example, because the parcel makes the journey twice. Sectors with 30% or 40% return rates — apparel especially — carry a proportionally larger hidden cost, and better sizing information at the point of sale reduces emissions more effectively than anything downstream.

Consolidation. Two items in one box travel once. Multiple shipments from the same order each incur their own last mile, which is the most emissions-intensive leg per kilometre. Where a retailer offers to hold items and ship together, that is usually a genuine reduction rather than a gesture.

What moves the number less than people expect is packaging material choice. It matters — 19% of the footprint in the worked example — but switching material types typically changes it by a fraction of that, while using a smaller box changes both the packaging and the transport figure at once. Limitations

The emission factors are published averages for each mode and carry real uncertainty. Published values for road freight span roughly 60 to 150 grams per tonne-kilometre depending on vehicle size, load factor and whether the return leg runs empty; air freight factors vary by a factor of two between short and long stage lengths. Treat the result as an order of magnitude with a confident ranking between modes rather than a precise figure.

Aviation has warming effects beyond CO2 — contrail formation and high-altitude nitrogen oxides — which many methodologies account for by multiplying the CO2 figure by somewhere between 1.7 and 3. The air figures here do not include that multiplier, so the real climate impact of the air option is materially worse than shown, and the gap between air and ground wider still.

The model covers the transport legs, the packaging material and the return leg. It excludes the warehouse energy behind the shipment, the emissions of the sorting facilities it passes through, refrigeration if the goods need it, and the empty-running of vehicles repositioning between jobs. It also assumes a direct route: real parcels travel through hub networks, and the distance actually driven commonly exceeds the point-to-point figure by a substantial margin.

Finally, allocating a share of a shared vehicle to one parcel is an approximation by construction. A tonne-kilometre factor assumes a representative load; a parcel on a nearly empty van carries a much larger real share of that vehicle's emissions than one on a full one, and no calculator working from weight and distance alone can know which it was.
