Quick Answer — What Category Is My Blood Pressure?
The 2017 ACC/AHA guideline for high blood pressure in adults, from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, sets five categories:
- Normal — systolic below 120 and diastolic below 80
- Elevated — systolic 120–129 and diastolic below 80
- Stage 1 hypertension — systolic 130–139 or diastolic 80–89
- Stage 2 hypertension — systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher
- Hypertensive crisis — systolic above 180 and/or diastolic above 120
When the two numbers fall into different categories, the higher category applies. A reading of 128/84 is Stage 1, because a diastolic of 84 is Stage 1 even though a systolic of 128 is only Elevated.
A single reading does not diagnose high blood pressure. Diagnosis is based on the average of repeated, properly taken readings on separate occasions, and this calculator does not replace that measurement process or a doctor's assessment.
