What the ratio adds beyond a single cholesterol number
Total Cholesterol to HDL ratio (TC/HDL) is calculated by dividing total cholesterol by HDL ('good') cholesterol, using two numbers from the same lipid panel. A single total cholesterol number in isolation doesn't distinguish someone with high HDL (generally protective) from someone with the same total driven by high LDL ('bad' cholesterol) — the ratio captures some of that balance in one number. Consistent with guidance referenced by the American Heart Association and the earlier NCEP ATP III framework, commonly used bands are: below 3.5 considered low risk, 3.5 to 5.0 considered moderate/average risk, and above 5.0 considered higher risk.
