A set at 20% off with 8% sales tax and free shipping is not the price on the box, and neither is one at full price with $12 of postage. Because price per piece is a ratio, those adjustments move it more than people expect.

Take the $79.99, 1,034-piece set above. At list it is 7.74 cents per piece. Apply a 20% discount and 8% tax and it becomes 6.68 cents — a 14% improvement that the shelf price never showed you.

Price per piece counts a minifigure as one part, which is the measure’s biggest blind spot. A minifigure is typically worth several dollars on its own, so a set with six of them can look expensive per piece while being good value overall, and a licensed set with no figures can look cheap while offering little.

Enter the minifigure count and what you would value each at, and the calculator subtracts that before dividing. The result answers a different and more honest question: what am I paying for the plastic?

What to value a figure at is your call. Look the specific figures up on BrickLink’s price guide rather than using a flat rate, because a common city torso and an exclusive licensed character are not the same thing.

Search for the average price per piece and you will find numbers from about 6 cents to about 13 cents, presented with equal confidence. They disagree for reasons that are worth understanding before you adopt any of them.

• Two different averages. Averaging each set’s own ratio gives a different figure from dividing total price by total pieces, because small sets have high ratios and pull the first number up.
• Theme mix. A sample heavy on licensed sets reads higher than one heavy on Creator and City.
• Year and region. Prices move, and a figure that was right for a US catalogue five years ago is not right for a UK one today.
• Whether Duplo and Technic are in the sample. Duplo parts are large and few; Technic sets are full of small pins. Both distort the ratio in opposite directions.

This is why the benchmark on this page is an input rather than a constant. Set it from sets comparable to the one you are pricing, and the verdict means something.

It tells you nothing about whether you will enjoy the build, and it is a poor guide for a few categories. Large-panel sets and Duplo look terrible per piece and may still be exactly what you want.
