How the calculation works

1Start with the Near Mint price for the exact pressing, not the title. Guide prices and sold-listing averages are quoted at Near Mint by convention, and that single number is what every grade below scales off. A 1969 first pressing and a 2015 reissue of the same album are different records with different Near Mint figures.
2Grade the disc and the sleeve separately, and grade them honestly under a bright light. The most common mistake in the hobby is grading by how a record looks in its jacket rather than out of it. Goldmine grades on visual inspection, and its scale is deliberately harsh: a record with any visible marks that affect play is not VG+.
3The drop between grades is steep and it is not linear. Moving from Near Mint to VG+ halves the value; VG halves it again. On a record with a $600 Near Mint price and a Good sleeve, moving the disc from VG+ to VG takes the estimate from $240.00 to $127.50 — $112.50 of value turning on one grade, which is why careful grading matters far more on scarce titles than on common ones.
4The pressing multiplier is where research does the work. Matrix numbers, label variations, and country of pressing routinely separate a $400 copy from a $30 copy of the same album. Set this from recent completed sales of the exact matrix you hold, not from the highest asking price you can find.

Quick Answer — How Much Does Condition Cut a Record's Value?

Record price guides quote the Near Mint figure, and every grade below is a percentage of it. The Goldmine grading standard, which is the convention most of the hobby follows, puts a VG+ copy at about half the Near Mint price, a VG copy at about a quarter, and a Good copy at 10 to 15 percent.

A $100 Near Mint guide price carried down the scale, graded the same on disc and sleeve:

That is a steep, non-linear curve, and it is the single most important thing to understand about record values. Two grades of difference is not a modest discount — it is a 75 percent one.

How to Use This Calculator: A $120 Record in VG+ / VG

Start with the Near Mint guide price for the exact pressing, not the title. Enter $120.

Grade the disc under a bright light, out of the sleeve. Say it is VG+ — light scuffs, no marks that affect play. Grade the sleeve separately at VG — visible ring wear and a split seam.

The disc multiplier is 50 percent and the sleeve multiplier is 25 percent, so the combined multiplier is 0.50 × 0.75 + 0.25 × 0.25 = 0.4375. Against the $120 guide price that gives $52.50, or 43.75 percent of Near Mint.

Now the part sellers skip. At an 8 percent marketplace fee that is $4.20, and shipping a single LP costs about $6.00. Net proceeds are $42.30 — 35 percent of the Near Mint figure the guide quotes.

Leave the pressing multiplier at 1.0 when your guide price already refers to the pressing you hold. Drop it below 1.0 when you are working from a first-pressing price but holding a later repress, and set it from completed sales rather than from asking prices.

The Formulas This Calculator Uses

Combined multiplier = Disc grade % × 0.75 + Sleeve grade % × 0.25.

The Goldmine grade percentages the multipliers use: M 120%, NM 100%, VG+ 50%, VG 25%, G+ 15%, G 10%, Fair 4%, Poor 2%.

The Mint figure sits above 100 percent deliberately. Goldmine reserves Mint for a record that is effectively perfect, most often a still-sealed copy, and a sealed original does trade at a premium over an opened Near Mint one. Use it sparingly: a record you have played is not Mint, whatever it looks like.

There is nothing hidden in the model. If you disagree with the 75/25 disc weighting, or your corner of the market prices VG+ at 60 percent rather than 50, the multiplier arithmetic is right there to adjust for.

A Second Example: Where Grading Actually Costs Money

Take a scarce title with a $600 Near Mint guide price and a rough Good sleeve, and compare two grades of disc.

With a VG+ disc, the combined multiplier is 0.50 × 0.75 + 0.10 × 0.25 = 0.40, giving $240.00.

With a VG disc, it is 0.25 × 0.75 + 0.10 × 0.25 = 0.2125, giving $127.50.

One grade of difference on the disc is $112.50. On a $20 record the same grade step is worth under $4 and nobody argues about it; on a $600 record it is worth arguing about, and it is why serious buyers ask for photographs and a play-grade rather than a visual one.

Now the opposite end. Take 40 common records with a $25 Near Mint price each, all VG+ / VG+. Gross value is $500.00, fees take $40.00, and shipping at $6 a record takes $240.00 — 48 percent of the gross. Net proceeds are $220.00, or $5.50 a record. This is the arithmetic that turns a collection clear-out into a disappointment, and the reason common records are sold in lots rather than one at a time.

Grading Honestly, and Why the Pressing Matters More Than the Grade

The Goldmine scale is harsher than most sellers apply it. Near Mint means a record that looks and plays as though it has barely been touched — no marks visible under a bright light, no groove wear, a sleeve with no ring wear, no seam splits and no writing. Most records described as Near Mint online are VG+, and most described as VG+ are VG.

Grade the disc out of the sleeve, angled under a strong light, and look at the run-out area and the first and last tracks, which take the most wear. Grade the sleeve separately and note seam splits, ring wear, writing, and whether the inner sleeve and any inserts are present. A missing insert on a title collectors care about can cost more than a grade of disc condition.

For anything scarce, the pressing identification does more work than the grade. Matrix and run-out numbers, label variations, country of pressing, and the presence or absence of a particular credit routinely separate a $400 copy from a $30 copy of what looks like the same album. Get the pressing right first; the grade is a multiplier on top of a number that has to be correct.

Guide prices lag the market, and in both directions. A price guide records what was being paid when it was compiled, and completed sales on a marketplace are a much better source for what a record is worth this month. Use the guide for structure and recent sold listings for the level.

Limitations

This is an estimate built on a guide price you supply, and it inherits every problem with that price. If the Near Mint figure is stale, or refers to a different pressing, or comes from an asking price rather than a sale, the output is wrong by whatever margin the input is wrong by.

The 75/25 disc-to-sleeve weighting is a convention, not a rule. Some categories invert it — for a collectible sleeve design, or a record where the jacket carries the value, the sleeve deserves more weight, and a few genuinely price the two components separately.

Grade percentages are averages across a whole market that does not behave uniformly. Very scarce titles hold a larger share of their Near Mint value in lower grades, because a VG copy is the only copy available; very common titles hold less, because there is always a better one. The steepest departures from the Goldmine percentages happen at both ends of the scarcity range.

Nothing here accounts for a seller's reputation, listing quality, photographs, or how long a record sits before it sells. Two identical copies listed by different sellers do not fetch the same price, and time on the market is a real cost that this calculator does not model.
