A carbon tax prices greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of CO2 equivalent. To find what it costs a household, convert each fuel into tonnes using its published emission factor, multiply by the rate, and subtract any dividend the scheme pays back.
The standard combustion factors, in kilograms of CO2 per unit:
- Gasoline — 8.887 kg per gallon
- Diesel — 10.18 kg per gallon
- Natural gas — 5.302 kg per therm
- Heating oil — 10.16 kg per gallon
- Air travel — roughly 0.19 kg per passenger mile
- Electricity — varies enormously; the US average is about 0.371 kg per kWh, but a hydro or nuclear grid can be under 0.05 and a coal-heavy one over 0.7
A three-person household burning 520 gallons of gasoline, 640 therms of gas, 10,500 kWh on an average grid and flying 4,200 miles emits 12.71 tonnes — about 4.24 tonnes per person. At $65 per tonne that is $826 a year, or $69 a month.
Most of the visible effect arrives as unit prices rather than a bill: at $65 a tonne, gasoline rises 57.8 cents a gallon, natural gas 34.5 cents a therm, and electricity 2.4 cents a kWh.
