Enter the tonnes of CO2 you want to offset each year. The number should come from a footprint estimate rather than a guess. With 10 tonnes, the three results are $20 for renewable energy credits, $220 for reforestation and $6,000 for direct air capture. Reforestation costs 11 times the renewable figure, and direct air capture costs 27 times the reforestation figure.

Read the three numbers as three different claims rather than three prices for one product. $20 buys a certificate that some electricity was generated without emissions. $220 buys carbon stored in growing trees that could later burn. $6,000 buys removal with storage measured in geological time. Most of the decision is about which of those claims you actually want to make.

A common approach is to split the purchase. Covering 8 of the 10 tonnes with reforestation costs $176 and the other 2 with direct air capture costs $1,200, so $1,376 in total, a fraction of the all-DAC price while still including some durable removal.

Renewable energy cost = T × $2, where T is the annual tonnes of CO2 to offset (negative entries are treated as zero).

Reforestation cost = T × $22.

Direct air capture cost = T × $600.

The prices are fixed constants in the calculator, not live quotes, and there is no volume discount, broker fee or registry retirement fee. Because each result is a single multiplication, the ratios never change: direct air capture is always 300 times the renewable price and about 27 times the reforestation price, whatever tonnage you enter.

How the tiers compare with market data. The $2 renewable tier sits below the $2.67 average that Ecosystem Marketplace reported for 2024 (down from $3.92 in 2023). The $22 reforestation tier sits a little above the $20.44 ARR average for 2024. The same report puts the overall voluntary market average at $6.34 a tonne, with removal credits averaging $19.50 against $4.05 for reduction credits. The $600 direct air capture tier sits inside the $100-$2,000 range WRI reports and above its roughly $490 average.

A larger household or a small office estimating 25 tonnes a year gets $50 for renewable energy credits, $550 for reforestation and $15,000 for direct air capture.

The absolute gap is what changes the decision. At 10 tonnes the difference between the cheapest and most durable option is $5,980; at 25 tonnes it is $14,950. The ratio is identical, but a buyer who could justify $6,000 of direct air capture as a statement may not justify $15,000, and that is typically where portfolios start mixing tiers or narrowing to the emissions that are genuinely hard to cut.

At the small end, 1 tonne costs $2, $22 or $600 (the per-tonne prices themselves), which is a useful way to check any provider's quote against these tiers before scaling it up.

Additionality asks whether the reduction would have happened without the credit money. It is the main weakness of cheap renewable energy credits: once wind and solar became cheaper than fossil generation in many markets, a new wind farm is often built for its own economics. Ecosystem Marketplace records that in July 2024 the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market, reviewing renewable energy under its Core Carbon Principles, rejected most methodologies that used CDM tools to calculate the additionality of new renewable projects. The report also found renewable energy credit volumes falling 23 percent in 2024.

Permanence asks how long the carbon stays out of the atmosphere. An avoided emission is permanent in the sense that it never happened, but it removes nothing already emitted. A reforestation credit stores carbon in biomass that wildfire, pests, drought or logging can release, which is why forestry standards hold buffer pools of unsold credits against reversals. Direct air capture paired with geological storage aims for storage over very long timescales, though WRI notes that storage beyond million-tonne volumes is largely untested and needs rigorous monitoring.

Removals versus reductions is where the market is moving. Ecosystem Marketplace found removal credits cost 381 percent more than reduction credits in 2024, up from 245 percent in 2023. That premium is the market pricing permanence and additionality, and it is the same logic that separates the $22 and $600 tiers here.

Delivery risk matters for engineered removal. Much direct air capture is sold as future delivery, so the tonne you pay for today may not be removed for years. Check whether a purchase is for delivered tonnes or a forward contract.

These are three fixed representative prices, not quotes from any provider, and they do not update with the market. Actual prices vary with the verification standard (Verra, Gold Standard, Climate Action Reserve and others), vintage, project location, co-benefits and volume. Ecosystem Marketplace found a 217 percent premium in 2024 for credits from the last five vintage years, so an old, cheap credit and a recent one of the same type can differ several-fold.

The tool does not assess credit quality, which matters as much as price. It also collapses a wide field into three categories: REDD+ avoided deforestation, improved forest management, cookstoves, landfill gas, biochar and enhanced weathering each have their own price ranges and risks. Biochar alone averaged over $160 a tonne in 2024 according to the same report.
