The Mathematics of GPA Target Back-Solving
Calculating cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average problem where grades are weighted by the number of credit hours of each course. To determine the required GPA in future courses to reach a target cumulative GPA, we use the following algebraic formula:
GPA_(required) = (GPA_(target) × C_(total) - GPA_(current) × C_(current))/C_(remaining) where C_(total) = C_(current) + C_(remaining). This formula calculates the exact average grade point needed across remaining credits to balance out past performance and pull the cumulative average up to the desired target.
