The Mathematics of GPA Target Back-Solving
Calculating cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average problem where grades are weighted by the number of credit hours of each course. To determine the required GPA in future courses to reach a target cumulative GPA, we use the following algebraic formula:
$$GPA_{\text{required}} = \frac{GPA_{\text{target}} \times C_{\text{total}} - GPA_{\text{current}} \times C_{\text{current}}}{C_{\text{remaining}}}$$ where \(C_{\text{total}} = C_{\text{current}} + C_{\text{remaining}}\). This formula calculates the exact average grade point needed across remaining credits to balance out past performance and pull the cumulative average up to the desired target.
