Enter your baseline temperature: the typical waking reading from the lower, pre-ovulation part of this cycle, in °F. A chart that sat around 97.3°F for the first two weeks gives 97.3.

Enter today's reading (98.0°F) and your luteal phase length, the number of days from ovulation to your next period in previous cycles. If you have not charted before, 14 is a common starting assumption; the calculator accepts anything but uses 10 as a minimum and 16 as a maximum.

The results read: temperature shift 0.7°F, shift confirmed, estimated ovulation day 15, estimated cycle length 29 days, 13 days until the next period. If the shift line says not confirmed, the other results stay blank, because the calculator makes no projection without a shift.

Then enter tomorrow's reading, and the next day's. One high morning is not a pattern, and the charting rules below need three.

Temperature shift = Today's reading − Baseline (°F).

Shift confirmed when the shift is 0.4°F or more.

Estimated ovulation day = Current cycle day − 1, only when a shift is confirmed, and never earlier than day 1.

Estimated cycle length = Estimated ovulation day + Luteal phase length, with the luteal phase held between 10 and 16 days.

Days until next period = Estimated cycle length − Current cycle day.

The calculator checks one reading against one baseline. That is a deliberate simplification of real charting, which judges a run of readings. Placing ovulation on the day before the first high reading is a convention; the actual day can be a day or two either side. Readings that land exactly on the 0.4°F line are borderline: record them and let the following mornings decide.

A long cycle: cycle day 28, baseline 97.4°F, today 98.1°F, luteal phase 12 days. The shift is 0.7°F, confirmed. Estimated ovulation is day 27, estimated cycle length 39 days, and the next period is about 11 days away.

Compared with the first example, ovulation came twelve days later and the luteal phase is two days shorter, yet the cycle is ten days longer. In this pair of examples almost all the difference sits in the days before ovulation, the part of the cycle that usually varies most, which is why projecting from ovulation plus luteal length beats counting forward from the last period in an irregular cycle.

A rise that does not count yet: cycle day 18, baseline 97.4°F, today 97.7°F. The shift is 0.3°F, below the threshold, so the calculator reports no shift and makes no projection. That does not mean ovulation has not happened, only that this reading alone does not show it. Chart the next few mornings before drawing any conclusion.

Charting methods confirm a shift from a run of readings, not one morning. The widely taught three-over-six rule used in sympto-thermal fertility awareness works like this: find three consecutive readings that are each higher than all of the previous six. Draw a coverline just above the highest of those six. The shift is confirmed when the three high readings sit above the coverline, with the third at least 0.2°C (about 0.4°F) above it. Teaching organisations differ in the fine print, such as what to do when one of the three touches the line, so follow the rules of the method you have been taught.

The readings only mean something if they are taken the same way every day. Take your temperature as soon as you wake, before getting up, talking or drinking, at roughly the same time each morning, after a block of sleep, with the same thermometer and the same route (oral readings should always be oral). A thermometer made for BBT, reading to 0.05°C or 0.1°F, is easier to chart than a fever thermometer.

Mark anything that could disturb a reading: illness or fever, alcohol the night before, a late night or broken sleep, a very different waking time, travel across time zones, or some medications. Those readings can be left out when applying the rule.

This is also why the method is retrospective. The rule needs three high days, and Wilcox, Weinberg and Baird (New England Journal of Medicine, 1995) found that conception followed intercourse only in a six-day window ending on the day of ovulation, so by the time a shift is confirmed that window has closed. For planning ahead, pair the chart with a forward-looking sign such as cervical mucus or an LH test.

This calculator is not a method of contraception and should not be used to decide when unprotected sex is safe. It is not a pregnancy test, and it cannot diagnose a fertility problem or confirm that ovulation occurred. A chart that never shows a clear rise, or a luteal phase that is repeatedly short, is worth discussing with a doctor.

It compares a single reading with a baseline you choose, so it will accept a one-off high reading caused by illness or poor sleep. It works in Fahrenheit only, assumes ovulation on the day before the entered day, and cannot see earlier or later days of the chart. Treat every result as a prompt to keep charting, and see a clinician for anything about fertility, pregnancy or irregular cycles.
