Determining the Date of Conception
Conception—the fertilization of an egg by a sperm cell—occurs during a narrow biological window. For couples tracking pregnancy or planning a family, identifying the estimated date of conception is helpful, though mathematically it is an estimate.
Conception does not always occur on the date of intercourse. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while an egg remains viable for only 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. Therefore, the Conception Window encompasses the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.
