Mapping the E-commerce Conversion Funnel
In e-commerce operations, the conversion funnel tracks a customer's journey from visiting your website to completing a purchase. The funnel is divided into key stages: website sessions, product views, cart additions, checkout initiations, and completed orders.
The overall conversion rate measures the percentage of store sessions that result in a purchase. A standard e-commerce conversion rate ranges between 1% and 3%. Improving this rate by even a fraction of a percent can significantly increase revenues without spending more on marketing.
To calculate these funnel metrics, divide completed orders by total sessions. For example, a shop that gets 100,000 monthly sessions and 2,000 purchases has a 2% conversion rate. Monitoring this rate across mobile and desktop devices reveals user experience bottlenecks.
