How to rotate PDF pages here
Saving is quick even for a long document, because no page is redrawn:
- Add the PDF, or several. Every page appears as a thumbnail, and the selected page is shown larger beside the grid (under a Files and Preview switch on a phone).
- Choose which pages the buttons act on: All, Odd, Even, Range, or Ticked. A range is written like 2, 5-7, 10-, where 10- means page 10 to the end.
- Press Left 90°, Right 90° or 180°. Turns add up: Right 90° twice equals 180°, and Left 90° after Right 90° brings the page back. Each turned page carries a badge: ↻ 90°, 180° or ↺ 90°.
- Correct any single page with the rotate button on its thumbnail, or select it and press R.
- Save. One file downloads as a PDF; several come back in one ZIP.
Reset takes the turns off again, so trying an angle costs nothing. Try with sample files loads a few PDFs made for this site, one of them a scan that came out sideways, if you want to see the tool work before opening your own document.
What happens to your file
The PDF is read from your disk into this tab’s memory. Mozilla’s pdf.js draws the thumbnails and reads the page text for suggestions; pdf-lib writes the corrected file. The page loads both the first time you add a file, and if that download fails, a message offers a retry and your files stay put.
No request carries the file, its name, its page count or its size. To check, open your browser’s developer tools, choose the Network tab, add a PDF and rotate it: you will see requests for the tool’s own code and nothing the size of your document. The rotation flag and “baked” rotation
Each page of a PDF is described by a small record inside the file: its size, the fonts and images it uses, and a content stream, the drawing instructions that put every letter and line in place. The record can also hold an entry called /Rotate, a number that is 0, 90, 180 or 270, telling a viewer to turn the page clockwise by that many degrees whenever it shows or prints it. That number is the only thing this tool changes.
Because the drawing instructions are left alone, the rotation is lossless. We checked: the content stream of every page was hashed before and after rotating, and the hashes were identical. Text stays selectable and searchable, a scan keeps every pixel, and links turn with the page. It is also reversible. Turning a page back just sets the number back, and four quarter turns in one direction return exactly the page you started with.
“Baked” rotation means redrawing the page so it is upright with no instruction at all. This tool does not offer it, because here that would mean drawing each page again as an image, throwing away what the flag preserves.
The PDF specification expects viewers and printers to honour /Rotate, and mainstream readers do. When a turn seems to be ignored, there are two usual reasons. Some print dialogs have an auto-rotate and centre setting that re-orients each page to fit the paper, so a page you turned to landscape can be turned again to fill a portrait sheet. And some older or simpler programs, including some image-extraction and label-printing tools, read the page as stored and skip the instruction.
If a portal insists on pages that are physically upright, convert the PDF with PDF to JPG, which draws each page with its rotation applied, then rebuild it with JPG to PDF. The cost: every page becomes a picture, so text can no longer be selected or searched, links stop working, and the file is often larger. Keep the rotated original for everyone else.
Scans that come in sideways
A document feeder pulls every sheet through the same way and records what it sees, with no idea which way up the writing is. One sheet placed upside down in the stack comes out upside down, and a spreadsheet printed landscape inside a portrait report comes out on its side. Some scanner software reads the text and corrects this; when that setting is off or unsure, pages keep the direction they were fed in.
Phone scans go wrong differently. A phone decides which way is up from its motion sensor, and held flat over a desk, pointing straight down, it cannot tell, so the photo can land a quarter turn out. Tilting the phone slightly towards you before the shot usually helps.
Suggest rotations from the text reads the direction of the text on each page. pdf.js reports every piece of text with its position and the direction of its baseline, so the tool counts how many characters read left to right, run down the page or sit upside down. When a page has at least about 20 characters and 60% of them agree, it suggests the turn that makes them upright. Below that it stays silent, so a chart with a few rotated axis labels is not flipped on a guess.
A plain scan without text recognition (OCR) cannot be judged: it is a picture of text, with nothing for the tool to measure, so turn those pages by eye from the thumbnails. A searchable scan carries an invisible text layer and can be judged, provided the OCR read the words the right way.
Suggestions appear under each page and are never applied silently. You press Apply N suggestions to accept them, and can turn any page differently afterwards. That matters for a wide table printed sideways on purpose, where the text-based answer is not what readers expect.
Rotating some pages only
The page choice decides which pages the buttons act on, and each press adds to the turns those pages already have.
- Odd or Even, for double-sided scans. When sheets printed to flip on the short edge, like a top-bound pad, go through a feeder set to flip on the long edge (or the reverse), every back comes out upside down. In a double-sided scan the backs are the even pages, so choose Even and press 180° once.
- Range, for a block of pages. For a report whose pages 14 to 20 are tables printed sideways, type 14-20 and press whichever quarter turn brings the headings to the top. Ranges combine, as in 3, 8-9, 21-.
- Ticked, for scattered pages. Click them in the grid, or move with the arrow keys and press Space, then press a button once for all of them.
- Single pages: the thumbnail’s rotate button, or R, turns just that page, whatever the page choice says.
Choices combine in order: turning All by 90° and then one page back leaves that page as it was. The badges show which pages will change before you save.
Your data
The tool remembers only the options you last chose, in your browser’s local storage. It keeps no record of your files, their names or how many pages you rotated, and there is no counter or account behind it. The PDFs are held in the tab’s memory and are gone when you close it. A password typed to open a file is used in this tab only and never saved.
