What is Slope? Understanding the Basics
Slope measures the steepness and direction of a line. Think of it like this: how much does a line go up (rise) compared to how far it goes across (run)?
The standard formula for slope is: m = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁)
- m = slope (the value we're calculating)
- y₂ - y₁ = vertical change (rise)
- x₂ - x₁ = horizontal change (run)
So if a line goes up 4 units for every 2 units it moves to the right, the slope is 4/2 = 2. Simple!
