Rounding Calculator

These are numbers people often need rounded, worked out with the standard half-up rule. To round to the nearest whole number you only ever look at one digit, the tenths digit straight after the decimal point, no matter how many digits follow it.

Long decimals are no harder. 4,061.12471737 has eight digits after the point, but only the first one (1) decides the whole-number answer, so it rounds down to 4,061. Everything after the tenths digit is ignored.

Watch the carry. When the ones digit is 9 and you round up, it carries into the tens: 9.69 and 9.9372684326 both become 10, not 9 or "9.10".

Keep the zero when rounding to a place. 5.2987901406 to the nearest hundredth is 5.30, not 5.3. The final 0 shows the number is accurate to two decimal places, and many homework checkers expect it. For the nearest whole number, write 7, not 7.0.

Rounding to the nearest hundredth is common when working with money:

Rule: Look at the thousandths place (the third digit after the decimal point).

• If the thousandths digit is 5 or more → round up (increase the hundredths digit by 1)
• If the thousandths digit is 4 or less → round down (keep the hundredths digit the same)

Step-by-step example: 3.785 → nearest hundredth

• Step 1: Identify the hundredths place → 8 (0.08)
• Step 2: Look at the thousandths place → 5

Rounding to larger place values follows the exact same rule:

Rule: Look at the digit to the right of the place value you're rounding to.

• Nearest Ten: Look at ones digit (e.g. 47 → 50 | 42 → 40)
• Nearest Hundred: Look at tens digit (e.g. 476 → 500 | 436 → 400)
• Nearest Thousand: Look at hundreds digit (e.g. 4,765 → 5,000 | 4,234 → 4,000)
• Nearest Ten Thousand: Look at thousands digit (e.g. 47,650 → 50,000)

Step-by-step example: 476 → nearest hundred

• Step 1: Identify the hundreds place → 4
• Step 2: Look at the tens digit → 7
• Step 3: Is 7 ≥ 5? → Yes, round up (500)
• Answer = 500

Rule: Count significant figures starting from the first non-zero digit, then apply the same 5-or-more rounding rule to the next digit.

Example: 456,789 rounded to 3 significant figures

• Step 1: First 3 significant figures → 4, 5, 6
• Step 2: Look at the next digit → 7
• Step 3: Is 7 ≥ 5? → Yes, round up (456 → 457)
• Answer = 457,000 (zeros fill in to keep the number the correct size)

Example: 0.003456 rounded to 2 significant figures

• Step 1: First 2 significant figures (leading zeros skipped) → 3, 4
• Step 2: Look at the next digit → 5
• Step 3: Is 5 ≥ 5? → Yes, round up (34 → 35)
• Answer = 0.0035

A round up calculator can use different rounding modes depending on your mathematical or financial requirements:

• Half Up (Default): 5 or more = round up (3.5 → 4, 3.4 → 3). Best for general rounding and everyday use.
• Half Down: 5 or more = round down towards zero (3.5 → 3, 3.4 → 3). Used in statistical contexts.
• Round Up (Away from Zero): Always round up (3.1 → 4, 3.9 → 4). Best for estimating and budgeting.
• Round Down (Towards Zero): Always round down (3.1 → 3, 3.9 → 3). Best for truncating values.

Rounding negative numbers can be tricky. Here are the rules across modes:

• Half Up: 3.5 → 4 | -3.5 → -4 (rounds away from zero)
• Round Up (Away from Zero): 3.5 → 4 | -3.5 → -4
• Round Down (Towards Zero): 3.5 → 3 | -3.5 → -3
• Ceil: 3.5 → 4 | -3.5 → -3
• Floor: 3.5 → 3 | -3.5 → -4

Problem 1: Round 4.56 to the nearest whole number. Solution: Whole number = 4, Tenths digit = 5 (≥5) → Round up → 5.

Problem 2: Round 7.83 to the nearest tenth. Solution: Tenths digit = 8, Hundredths digit = 3 (<5) → Round down → 7.8.
