Plastic Waste Reduction Calculator

Enter the items you avoid each week: the bottles, bags, cups or containers you no longer buy because of a reusable swap or a package-free alternative. Count only items that genuinely stop being made, not items you still buy and recycle.

Enter the average weight of one empty item in ounces. This is the input most worth checking. The International Bottled Water Association reports that the average 16.9 oz single-serve PET water bottle weighs 9.25 grams, about 0.33 oz. The calculator's starting value of 1.5 oz is more than four times that, so replace it with a weight for your own item: weigh a few on a kitchen scale and divide.

Choose the plastic type. Water and soda bottles and most clear food trays are PET (resin code 1); milk jugs, detergent bottles and many thin grocery bags are HDPE (code 2). "Mixed" averages the two factors when you aren't sure.

With 7 bottles at 0.33 oz, PET, the calculator shows 7.5 lb avoided a year, 0.0038 tons, 0.008 metric tonnes of CO2e, and a vehicles-off-road equivalent of 0.0018. Had the 1.5 oz default been left in place, it would have reported 34.1 lb and 0.037 tonnes, a result inflated by the weight input, not the habit.

Weekly pounds = items a week × ounces an item ÷ 16.

Annual pounds = weekly pounds × 52. Annual short tons = annual pounds ÷ 2,000. WARM factors are expressed per short ton, so the calculator converts to short tons rather than metric tonnes before applying them.

Annual CO2e avoided (metric tonnes) = annual short tons × factor, with PET 2.17, HDPE 1.42, and mixed as the simple average of the two, 1.795. These are WARM Version 16's net source-reduction factors for the current mix of inputs, from Exhibit 5-3 of the Plastics chapter. Per kilogram of plastic, the PET factor works out to about 2.4 kg of CO2e.

Vehicles off road = CO2e avoided ÷ 4.6, the US EPA's figure for the metric tonnes of CO2 a typical passenger vehicle emits in a year.

WARM's own mixed plastics source-reduction factor is 1.87, weighted by the shares of HDPE and PET in the waste stream, so the calculator's mixed option runs about 4 percent below WARM. For the seven bottles it gives 0.0067 tonnes against 0.0070 at WARM's weighting.

Avoid 10 HDPE grocery bags a week at an assumed 0.3 oz each by carrying reusable bags. That is 9.75 lb a year, 0.0049 short tons, and 0.0069 tonnes of CO2e avoided (displayed rounded as 0.007).

Compare it with the seven bottles. The bags weigh more (9.75 lb against 7.5 lb), yet avoid less carbon, 0.0069 tonnes against 0.0081, because HDPE's source-reduction factor of 1.42 is about two-thirds of PET's 2.17. Weight decides most of the answer, and resin decides the rest.

Together the two habits avoid about 0.015 tonnes a year, roughly 15 kilograms of CO2e from 17 lb of plastic. That is why plastic reduction reads as a small line on a carbon footprint even when it is a large change in a household's rubbish.

WARM scores each way of managing a short ton of material. For plastics, Version 16 gives net factors of −2.17 for source reduction of PET, −1.04 for recycling it, +1.24 for combustion and +0.02 for landfilling; for HDPE the figures are −1.42, −0.76, +1.29 and +0.02. Negative numbers are emissions avoided.

Source reduction means the item is never made: raw material extraction, resin production and manufacturing emissions all disappear. Recycling keeps the item's material in use, avoiding part of the production of new resin, but the item was still made once and the recycling process itself uses energy. That is why, across these resins, WARM credits source reduction with roughly twice the benefit of recycling.

Landfilling plastic scores close to zero in WARM because plastic barely decomposes, so it releases almost no methane, while combustion releases its fossil carbon. Recycling is only available in WARM for HDPE, PET and PP, reflecting data limits; other resins such as polystyrene can be source-reduced in the model but not recycled.

This is the waste hierarchy in numbers (reduce, then reuse, then recycle), and it is why this calculator and the recycling impact calculator give different answers for the same pounds. They measure different actions.

The result covers greenhouse gas emissions only. It does not measure litter, ocean plastic, microplastics or wildlife harm, which are often the main reasons people cut single-use plastic.

It counts only the avoided disposable item. If the swap involves buying a reusable bottle or bag, that product's own manufacturing emissions are not subtracted, and a reusable that is rarely used can end up worse than the disposables it replaced.

The factors are US national averages from WARM's lifecycle data, and only PET and HDPE are offered. Item weights are the user's input, and the result scales directly with them, so a wrong weight gives a proportionally wrong answer.
