What is Customer Retention Cost (CRC)?
Customer Retention Cost (CRC) is the total per-customer cost of keeping existing customers active, satisfied, and renewing. It encompasses all expenses from customer success operations, loyalty incentives, and re-engagement marketing — divided by the number of successfully retained customers.
CRC ($) = (CS Payroll + Loyalty Program Costs + Renewal Marketing Costs) ÷ Retained Customers. If your team costs $30,000/month, loyalty programs cost $5,000, and renewal campaigns cost $10,000, retaining 1,000 customers costs $45 each.
Unlike Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), CRC is often under-tracked. Many companies focus entirely on acquiring new customers while unknowingly letting retention economics deteriorate — increasing churn and customer lifetime value erosion.
