Bowling Handicap Calculator

Enter your average as the league records it: total pins divided by games, with the fraction dropped. A bowler with 442 pins over three games has 147.33, recorded as 147, not 147.3 and not 148.

Enter the basis score (220) and percentage factor (80) from the league's rules sheet. If you are unsure, ask the league secretary; guessing either number makes the result meaningless.

Enter a game score to adjust, here 190. The results show a handicap of 58 pins, a handicap score of 248, and the gap line reading 220 − 147 = 73.

Now change only the game score. At 168 the handicap score is 226; at 142 it is 200. The handicap stays at 58 in every case, because it depends on the average, not on the game being bowled. That is the point of a handicap: it is fixed before the ball is thrown.

Handicap = floor((Basis − Average) × Percentage ÷ 100), and never less than 0.

Handicap score = Game score + Handicap.

Floor, not round: a raw result of 58.4 becomes 58, and a raw 58.9 also becomes 58. This matches how the average itself is recorded, so both numbers in the formula are whole pins handled the same way.

Zero floor: when the average equals or exceeds the basis, the subtraction is zero or negative and the handicap is 0. A 225 average in a 220-basis league gets no handicap and no penalty; a 200 game posts as 200.

Input handling: a negative average is treated as 0, the basis has a minimum of 1, and the percentage is limited to 0-150%. Nothing else is adjusted, so a league cap on the maximum handicap has to be applied by hand.

Handicap leagues usually score a three-game series, and the handicap is added to each game. The 147 bowler in the 220/80% league bowls 168, 142 and 181. Each game gets the same 58 pins: 226, 200 and 239. The scratch series is 491 and the handicap series is 665, which is the scratch series plus 3 × 58.

Now a stronger bowler averaging 178 in a league with a 200 basis at 90%: (200 − 178) × 0.90 = 19.8, dropped to 19 pins, so a 190 game posts as 209. The gap to the basis is only 22 pins, and a higher factor cannot make up for a small gap.

Put the first bowler into different leagues and the choices become visible. At 147:

• 200 basis: 42 pins at 80%, 47 at 90%
• 210 basis: 50 pins at 80%, 56 at 90%
• 220 basis: 58 pins at 80%, 65 at 90%

A higher basis and a higher factor both help low-average bowlers. Leagues that want scratch bowlers to keep an edge choose a lower basis or a lower percentage; leagues that want every team in contention pick 90% or 100% of a high basis.

The handicap is only as good as the average fed into it, and United States Bowling Congress rules set how that average is defined. Under the USBC Playing Rules, an average is total pins divided by games bowled, with fractions disregarded.

USBC Rule 319 covers averages for handicap and classified tournaments. It asks for the bowler's highest average from the previous season in a single USBC league of at least 21 games, or a composite of all USBC leagues. If a bowler's current average over 21 or more games is 10 or more pins higher than that prior-season figure, the current average must be used. A bowler who submits an average that is too low, gaining extra handicap, can have their score disqualified.

Leagues then add their own rules on top: how many games a new bowler needs before an average counts, what average to assign until then, and whether handicaps are recalculated weekly or fixed for a period. That is why two leagues using the identical formula can still hand the same bowler different handicaps in the same week.

The calculator computes one individual handicap from one average. It does not track a changing average across weeks, apply a maximum-handicap cap, total a team handicap, or enforce the entering-average rules above. It also assumes the average you enter is correct; an average from too few games, or from a different league or season, will give a handicap the league secretary would not accept.

It does not handle unusual formulas some leagues use, such as a handicap based on a percentage of the difference between team averages, or a fixed pin table. Confirm the exact rule sheet before relying on a number for prize money.

Finally, a handicap only evens out averages. A bowler having a better night than usual still wins on the handicap score, so a tight handicap league rewards consistency against your own average rather than raw pinfall, and an out-of-date average in either direction tilts every game.

Handicap systems solve the same fairness problem in different ways.
