## CPM vs. RPM: the creator distinction

CPM (Cost Per Mille) is the advertiser's rate — what advertisers pay YouTube per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM (Revenue Per Mille) is the creator's metric — your earnings per 1,000 total video views. The gap between the two is YouTube's 45% revenue share cut.

Gross Ad Revenue = (Monetized Playbacks ÷ 1,000) × Advertiser CPM. Creator Net Revenue = Gross Ad Revenue × 55% (standard YouTube partner share). Creator RPM = (Creator Net Revenue ÷ Total Views) × 1,000.

If you have 100,000 views with 60,000 monetized playbacks and an advertiser CPM of $5: Gross Revenue = (60,000/1,000) × $5 = $300. Creator net = $300 × 55% = $165. Creator RPM = ($165 / 100,000) × 1,000 = $1.65.

## What drives YouTube CPM?

CPM is determined by advertiser demand for your audience. Finance, investing, real estate, and B2B SaaS channels command the highest CPMs ($15–$50+), while gaming and entertainment channels see lower CPMs ($1–$5). Geography matters enormously — US, UK, and Australian audiences attract 3–5× higher CPMs than Southeast Asian markets.

Seasonal patterns are significant: Q4 (October–December) typically sees CPMs 50–100% higher than Q1 as advertisers spend holiday budgets. Video length affects monetization too — longer videos (8+ minutes) allow mid-roll ads, which increase total ad revenue per view.

Your [YouTube AdSense RPM calculator](/calculators/youtube-adsense-rpm-calculator) provides complementary estimates. For creator strategy, always track RPM alongside CPM to understand your monetization efficiency relative to total audience reach.

## Monetized playbacks vs. total views

Not every view is monetized. Ad blockers, geographic restrictions, and viewers under 18 (on Kid-safe content) reduce the monetized playback rate. Typical monetized playback rates range from 40–80% of total views depending on channel niche and audience.

To calculate your monetized playback rate: Monetized Playbacks ÷ Total Views × 100. A 60% rate means 6 in 10 views see at least one ad. Improving this requires reducing ad blocker usage (encourage direct channel subscriptions) and growing US/UK audience share.

For channels with memberships, Super Chat, merchandise, and brand deals, AdSense revenue may represent only 20–40% of total creator revenue. ## How to Use This Calculator

Enter total video views and monetized playbacks (views that served at least one ad) for the period, then input the advertiser CPM from YouTube Studio and your creator revenue share (default 55%).

The calculator converts monetized playbacks into gross ad revenue at the advertiser CPM, applies your revenue share for creator net revenue, then divides net revenue by total views for RPM — your true per-1,000-view earnings.

## Worked Example: Mid-Size Channel

A channel with 100,000 total views and 60,000 monetized playbacks has a $5 advertiser CPM and the standard 55% creator share. Gross revenue = (60,000 / 1,000) × $5 = $300.

Creator net revenue = $300 × 55% = $165. Creator RPM = ($165 / 100,000) × 1,000 = $1.65 — meaning every 1,000 total views (monetized or not) nets this channel $1.65 after YouTube's cut.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a typical YouTube RPM for a small creator?

Small creators (under 100K subscribers) typically earn RPMs of $1–$5. Finance and tech channels may see $8–$20 RPM. Entertainment and gaming channels often see $1–$3 RPM.

### How much does YouTube take from ad revenue?

YouTube takes 45% of gross ad revenue. Creators receive 55% of what advertisers pay. This split has been standard since the YouTube Partner Program launched.

### Can I negotiate a higher revenue share with YouTube?

Standard creators cannot negotiate the 55/45 split. YouTube's Premium revenue distribution works differently and is based on watch time from Premium subscribers.

### Why does CPM vary so much month to month?

Advertiser budgets are cyclical. Q4 holiday spending, back-to-school (August), and New Year campaigns inflate CPMs. January and July tend to be low-CPM months as budgets reset.

### Does enabling more ad types increase revenue?

Yes. Enabling skippable and non-skippable ads, overlay ads, and mid-rolls on eligible long-form videos increases total ad impressions per view, raising effective RPM.

### What is the difference between CPM and eCPM?

eCPM (effective CPM) is a calculated metric: (Total Earnings ÷ Total Impressions) × 1,000. It accounts for your actual mix of ad types and fill rates. The CPM in your YouTube Studio is the advertiser rate, not your eCPM.

### Do Shorts monetize at the same CPM rate?

No. YouTube Shorts uses a separate revenue pool model, not the standard CPM structure. Shorts revenue is generally significantly lower per view than long-form content.

### How many views do I need to earn $1,000/month?

At a $2 RPM: 500,000 views needed. At a $5 RPM: 200,000 views. At a $10 RPM: 100,000 views. Niche and audience quality determine your RPM, which makes niche selection a critical revenue decision.

### Does watch time affect CPM?

Watch time affects ad load (longer videos can include more ads) but not the per-ad CPM rate directly. However, higher watch time signals quality to YouTube's algorithm, which drives more recommended views.

### Can I earn money from YouTube without AdSense?

Yes — channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, merchandise shelf, and brand deals are all non-AdSense income streams. Many top creators earn more from sponsorships than from AdSense.

### What is the YouTube payment threshold?

YouTube pays when your AdSense balance reaches $100. Payments are issued monthly, approximately 21 days after the end of the earning month.

### How do I increase my monetized playback rate?

Target US, UK, Canadian, and Australian audiences (lower ad blocker usage, higher CPMs). Create content in high-advertiser-demand niches. Encourage desktop viewing, as mobile has higher ad blocker rates.
