## Conservation is driven by flow and frequency

Household water conservation depends on two main variables: how much water a fixture uses per event and how often that event occurs. Showers are measured in gallons per minute (GPM). Toilets are measured in gallons per flush (GPF). Reducing either the fixture rate or the frequency of use lowers total consumption, but the strongest savings come from improving both.

## The water conservation formulas

For showers, the daily savings are:

$$\text{Daily Shower Savings} = \text{Showers per Day} \times \text{Minutes per Shower} \times (\text{Old GPM} - \text{New GPM})$$

For toilets, the daily savings are:

$$\text{Daily Toilet Savings} = \text{Flushes per Day} \times (\text{Old GPF} - \text{New GPF})$$

Total daily savings are the sum of both. Annual gallons saved are daily savings multiplied by 365, and financial savings are annual gallons saved multiplied by the local water rate per gallon.

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter your household's showers per day and average shower length, plus the flow rate of your current and prospective new showerhead. Add daily toilet flushes and the flush volume of your current and prospective new toilet. Enter your local water rate per gallon. The calculator returns daily and annual gallons saved, split between shower and toilet upgrades, plus the annual dollar savings.

## Worked Example: 2 Showers/Day, 4 Flushes/Day

For a household taking two 10-minute showers a day and upgrading from a 2.5 GPM to a 1.5 GPM showerhead, daily shower savings are 2 × 10 × (2.5 − 1.5) = 20 gallons. With 4 daily flushes upgrading from a 3.5 GPF to a 1.2 GPF toilet, daily toilet savings are 4 × (3.5 − 1.2) = 9.2 gallons.

Combined daily savings of 29.2 gallons add up to 10,658 gallons a year — worth about $159.87 annually at $0.015 per gallon.
