## Why squat and deadlift use different scales

Squat and deadlift are both lower-body-dominant lifts, but most lifters can move more weight in a deadlift than a squat at a comparable training stage, since the deadlift has a shorter range of motion and involves less technical balance and mobility demand at the bottom position. Because of that consistent gap, standard bodyweight-ratio benchmarks use a higher threshold scale for deadlift than for squat at every tier, rather than sharing one scale across both lifts.

## Squat tiers (men)

Commonly cited men's squat benchmarks: Beginner around 0.75× bodyweight, Novice around 1.0×, Intermediate around 1.5×, Advanced around 2.0×, and Elite around 2.5× or higher. As with bench press, each tier reflects a real and legitimate stage of training — Intermediate (1.5× bodyweight) is itself a solid, multi-year-in-the-making milestone for most lifters, not a baseline expectation.

## What these tiers don't capture

Limb length has an especially large effect on squat and deadlift ratios — longer femurs make squatting mechanically harder and shorter arms make deadlifting mechanically easier, independent of actual strength or training quality. These benchmarks are a general population-level reference, not an assessment of individual technique, leverage, or genetic potential; use them for programming and goal-setting rather than as a precise judgment.
