## Scale is a ratio between representation and reality

A scale ratio expresses how a represented dimension compares to the actual dimension. In a 1:100 drawing, one unit on paper corresponds to one hundred units in the real object. In a 1:35 model, one model unit corresponds to thirty-five real units. Scale conversion is therefore a ratio problem rather than a simple unit-conversion problem.

## The scale conversion formulas

If a measured length is taken from a source scale with denominator s and converted into real size, then:

$$\text{Actual Length} = \text{Measured Length} \times s$$

If that same real dimension must then be converted into a target scale with denominator t, the target representation becomes:

$$\text{Target Length} = \frac{\text{Actual Length}}{t}$$

Combining both steps gives:

$$\text{Target Length} = \text{Measured Length} \times \frac{s}{t}$$

## Worked Example: Converting a 1:100 Measurement to 1:50

With the calculator's defaults — a 6-unit measured length at 1:100 source scale, converting to 1:50 target scale — the actual real-world length is 600 units (6 × 100).

Converting that same 600-unit real length into 1:50 scale gives a target length of 12 units (600 ÷ 50) — twice the original measured length, which makes sense since 1:50 is a less-compressed (larger) scale than 1:100, so the same real object appears bigger in the target representation. The overall ratio factor between the two scales is 2 (100 ÷ 50).
