## Quick Answer — How Much Fabric Does a Quilt Need?

Three separate calculations, and only one of them is straightforward.

**Binding** follows the perimeter. Total strip length is 2 × (width + length) plus an allowance for mitred corners and joining seams — 10 to 12 inches covers both. Divide by usable fabric width, round up for the strip count, and multiply by strip width for the yardage.

**Backing** needs to be larger than the quilt on every side so it can be loaded on a frame and trimmed square. Four inches of overhang per side, so eight inches on each dimension, is standard for a longarm.

**Batting** works the same way, usually with the same overhang.

Note the width you can actually use. Quilting cotton is sold as 42 inches, but selvages take roughly an inch, so **41 inches** is what you cut from. For a **60 × 80 inch** throw:

• **Binding** — 280 in perimeter plus 12 in allowance = 292 in needed, **8 strips** at 2½ in wide, **0.63 yd**

• **Backing** — 68 × 88 in finished, **2 panels seamed vertically**, **4.89 yd** (buy 5)

• **Batting** — 68 × 88 in from a 90-inch roll, **1 panel**, **2.44 yd**

Seaming that backing the other way would need **3 panels and 5.67 yd** — three-quarters of a yard more for the same quilt.

## How to Use This Calculator: A 60 × 80 Throw

Enter the finished quilt dimensions, your fabric width, and the selvage loss. Then the binding strip width — 2½ inches is the standard for double-fold binding, and 2¼ produces a slightly narrower finish.

For the throw above, the perimeter is 2 × (60 + 80) = **280 inches**. Adding 12 inches for the four mitred corners and the diagonal joins between strips gives **292 inches** needed. At 41 usable inches per strip that is **7.12 strips**, rounded up to **8**. Eight strips at 2½ inches is 20 inches of fabric, or **0.56 yd** — round up to **⅝ yd** and you have a comfortable margin.

The backing is where the calculator earns its place. The finished backing needs to be 68 × 88 inches. **Seamed vertically**, you cut panels the length of the quilt: 68 ÷ 41 rounds up to **2 panels**, each 88 inches long, so 176 inches or **4.89 yd**. **Seamed horizontally**, you cut panels the width: 88 ÷ 41 rounds up to **3 panels**, each 68 inches wide, so 204 inches or **5.67 yd**.

Same quilt, same fabric, **0.78 yd difference** purely from which way the panels run. The calculator reports both and names the cheaper one, which on a busy fabric with a directional print may not be the one you choose — but you should at least know what the choice costs.

The alternative is **wide backing fabric**, sold at 108 inches. At that width one panel covers the whole 88-inch length, needing just **2.44 yd** and no seam at all. It costs more per yard, but half the yardage and no seaming often makes it the better buy. ## A Second Example: A King Quilt Where the Answer Flips

Take a **90 × 108 inch** king. The perimeter is 396 inches, so binding needs **408 inches** and **10 strips**, giving **0.69 yd** — round to ¾.

The backing is 98 × 116 inches finished. **Seamed vertically**: 98 ÷ 41 rounds up to **3 panels** at 116 inches each, or **9.67 yd**. **Seamed horizontally**: 116 ÷ 41 also rounds up to **3 panels**, but each is only 98 inches wide, giving **8.17 yd**.

The recommendation flips. On the throw, vertical seaming won by 0.78 yd; on the king, horizontal wins by **1.5 yd**. There is no rule of thumb that gets this right — it depends on how each dimension divides into the usable width, and the answer changes as the quilt changes.

Wide backing is even more compelling here: 116 inches of 108-wide fabric is **3.22 yd** against 8.17 pieced. Five yards saved, no seam, and no matching a print across a join.

A **40 × 40 inch baby quilt** shows the third case: 48 × 48 backing needs **2 panels either way**, so both orientations give **2.67 yd** and the calculator reports no saving. The 5 binding strips come to **0.35 yd**. Small quilts are the ones where the orientation genuinely does not matter, which is worth knowing so you do not spend time on it.

## The Details That Change the Answer

**Usable width is not fabric width.** Selvages are woven differently and often printed with colour bars; they do not press flat and they shrink at a different rate, so they get trimmed. An inch of total loss is a reasonable default, but check your own fabric — some bolts lose closer to an inch and a half, and on a three-panel backing that can add a whole panel.

**Prewashing changes everything.** Quilting cotton commonly shrinks 2% to 5%, which on a 108-inch backing length is two to five inches. If you prewash, do it before measuring rather than calculating on the bolt dimensions. If you do not, be aware the first wash will shrink the finished quilt.

**Directional prints override the arithmetic.** If the backing has a print with an up and a down, the panel orientation is decided by the print rather than the yardage, and you buy whatever that requires. The same applies to a stripe you want running a particular way. The calculator tells you what each choice costs; it cannot tell you which one looks right.

**Longarm quilters set their own overhang.** Four inches per side is common, but many require six or even eight, and a quilt returned with too little backing to load is an expensive mistake. Ask before buying rather than after.

It does not calculate the fabric for the pieced top, which depends on the block design, the number of blocks, the cutting layout and how efficiently pieces nest on the fabric. That is a pattern-specific calculation with no general formula.

Binding is calculated as straight strips cut across the width of fabric, which is what the great majority of quilts use. Bias binding — cut at 45 degrees, necessary for curved edges and more durable on a quilt that will be heavily used — requires substantially more fabric, roughly 20% to 40% more depending on how the bias strips are laid out, and is not modelled here.

The backing calculation assumes rectangular panels joined with straight seams and does not account for matching a print across a join, which can cost several extra inches per seam. It also assumes the seam allowance is absorbed within the overhang, which is true at four inches of overhang and gets tight below that.

Finally, every figure is a minimum. Fabric is cut inaccurately at the shop, bolts run narrow, cutting errors happen, and a quarter-yard of margin has rescued far more projects than it has wasted. The rounded yardage figures here already round up to the nearest eighth; adding another quarter-yard on anything you cannot easily rebuy is sensible rather than wasteful.
