Now compare two competing product prices: $80 and $92. Here there is no natural “original” value if the goal is just comparison. We therefore use percentage difference: the absolute difference is 12, the average is 86, and the result is 12/86 ≈ 13.95%. This is not the same as a 15% increase. Choosing the correct denominator is the central conceptual skill in percentage mathematics.
