## A History of Morse Code

Morse code is a character encoding system that represents letters and numbers as sequences of short (dot, ·) and long (dash, –) signals. It was developed in the 1830s by Samuel F.B. Morse and Alfred Vail for use with the electric telegraph — the first telecommunications technology to span continents.

The code was designed with letter frequency in mind: the most common English letters received the shortest codes. E (the most frequent letter) is a single dot (·). T (the second most frequent) is a single dash (–). This minimized transmission time for typical messages.

Morse code transmitted across the first transatlantic cable in 1858, enabled naval coordination in both World Wars, and remained the international maritime distress standard (SOS: · · · – – – · · ·) until 1999. It is still used by amateur radio operators and in emergency beacons.

## The International Morse Code Standard

Prosigns are non-alphabetic procedural signals used to structure Morse communication: SK (· · · – · –) means "end of contact," BT (– · · · –) separates paragraphs, and AR (· – · – ·) signals "end of message."

## Modern Applications of Morse Code

Despite being over 180 years old, Morse code remains relevant in several fields. Amateur (Ham) radio operators around the world still use Morse (called CW, or Continuous Wave) because it is far more robust than voice in noisy radio conditions — experienced operators can copy CW at signal-to-noise ratios where voice is completely unintelligible.

In aviation, many Non-Directional Beacons (NDBs) and VHF Omni-directional Range (VOR) stations still transmit their identifier in Morse code, audible in the aircraft cockpit. Pilots must be able to identify these stations by their Morse ID.

Morse code has also been adopted as an accessibility tool: people with severe motor disabilities can use Morse via a single switch to communicate, type text, and control devices. Platforms like Google's Project Morse allow Android users to input Morse via the space bar.
