## Analyze your Biological Metabolic Age

Compare chronological age against estimated metabolic age by analyzing body fat and muscle mass composition.

- Calculate metabolic age instantly
- Find age difference variance
- Benchmark body composition health

## Chronological Age vs. Biological Metabolic Age

Chronological age is the count of calendar years you have lived. Biological metabolic age, however, is a measurement of how your basal metabolic rate (BMR) compares to standard population averages for your age group.

Your BMR is highly influenced by body composition. Muscle tissue is metabolically active and burns calories even at rest, whereas fat tissue has low metabolic activity. A person with high muscle mass and low body fat will have a high BMR, resulting in a younger metabolic age than their chronological age.

## Body Composition Metabolic Age Formulas

This calculator estimates metabolic age by evaluating deviation from sex-specific healthy averages:

1. **Male Baselines:** expected fat: 18%, expected muscle: 40%

2. **Female Baselines:** expected fat: 25%, expected muscle: 30%

The adjustment offset applied to your chronological age is modeled as:

$$\text{Fat Offset} = (\text{Body Fat \%} - \text{Expected Fat \%}) \times 0.4$$

$$\text{Muscle Offset} = (\text{Expected Muscle \%} - \text{Muscle Mass \%}) \times 0.3$$

$$\text{Metabolic Age} = \text{Age} + \text{Fat Offset} + \text{Muscle Offset}$$

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter your chronological age, your body fat percentage from a scale, caliper, or DEXA scan, your sex, and your muscle mass percentage if you know it.

The calculator compares your body fat and muscle mass against sex-specific healthy baselines and adjusts your chronological age up or down based on how far your composition sits from those baselines.

## Worked Example: 30-Year-Old Male, 22% Body Fat

A 30-year-old male with 22% body fat and 38% muscle mass is compared against the male baselines of 18% expected fat and 40% expected muscle.

Fat offset: \((22 - 18) \times 0.4 = 1.6\) years. Muscle offset: \((40 - 38) \times 0.3 = 0.6\) years.

Metabolic age: \(30 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 32\) years — 2 years older than his chronological age, driven by body fat running 4 points above the male baseline and muscle mass sitting slightly below it.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is metabolic age?

A comparison of your basal metabolic rate (BMR) against the average BMR of your chronological age group.

### What does a younger metabolic age mean?

It indicates that your body composition is lean and active, burning calories more efficiently than the average peer.

### Why is my metabolic age higher than my chronological age?

A higher age suggests a lower BMR, typically caused by a high body fat percentage and low muscle mass.

### How do I lower my metabolic age?

Lower it by building skeletal muscle through strength training and reducing body fat through a healthy diet.

### Does a bioimpedance scale measure metabolic age?

Yes, scales estimate it using BMR formulas derived from weight, age, sex, height, and electrical impedance.

### How is basal metabolic rate (BMR) related?

BMR is the energy your body requires to perform basic life functions at rest. Higher BMR lowers metabolic age.

### Does sleep affect metabolic age?

Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts hormones that regulate metabolism (like leptin and ghrelin), which can negatively affect metabolic health.

### Can metabolic age change quickly?

No, biological age changes gradually as you modify muscle density and fat composition over weeks and months.

### What is a typical healthy age range?

Aim to keep your metabolic age equal to or lower than your chronological age.

### Does aging naturally slow down metabolism?

Yes, BMR decreases as we age due to natural muscle loss (sarcopenia), but this can be combated with active resistance training.
