## Share of Voice (SOV) and Its Correlation with Market Share

Share of Voice (SOV) measures your brand’s exposure and visibility in the market compared to your competitors. Historically tracked in print and TV ad spend, modern digital SOV spans organic search clicks, social media mentions, and paid search ad impressions.

Businesses track SOV because it has a strong, proven correlation with market share. A brand whose SOV is higher than its current market share (Excess Share of Voice or ESOV) is highly likely to experience market share growth over the subsequent 12 to 24 months.

## The Share of Voice Calculation Formula

SOV is calculated by dividing your brand’s metric by the total market metric, converted to a percentage:

$$\text{SOV (\%)} = \left( \frac{\text{Your Brand Metric}}{\text{Total Market Metric}} \right) \times 100$$

Where the metric can be:

* **Paid Ads Spend:** Your ad budget divided by total market ad spend.

* **Organic Search:** Your organic search clicks divided by total market category search volume.

* **Social Media Mentions:** Your brand mention count divided by total industry mention count.

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter your brand's metric (ad spend, search clicks, impressions, or mentions) and the total market metric for the same category and period. The calculator divides your figure by the market total to return your Share of Voice as a percentage.

Compare your resulting SOV against your actual market share — if SOV consistently runs higher than market share (positive ESOV), it's a strong leading indicator of future share growth.

## Worked Example: Paid Search Category

A brand spends $25,000 on paid search within a category where total category ad spend is $100,000. SOV = ($25,000 / $100,000) × 100 = 25%.

If this brand's actual current market share is only 15%, it has a positive Excess Share of Voice of 10 percentage points — a signal that its market share is likely to grow toward its 25% visibility level over the next 12-24 months if it sustains this spend.
