## Understanding Alcohol By Volume (ABV) in Homebrewing

Alcohol by Volume (ABV) is the global standard measurement for indicating the alcohol strength of beer, cider, mead, and wine. In homebrewing, ABV is calculated by measuring the density (specific gravity) of the liquid before fermentation (Original Gravity or OG) and after fermentation is complete (Final Gravity or FG). ## Worked Example: A Standard 5-Gallon Batch

With the calculator's defaults — OG 1.050, FG 1.010, a 5-gallon batch, a target of 2.4 volumes of CO2, a beer temperature of 68°F, and corn sugar (dextrose) — the ABV comes out to 5.25% with 80% apparent attenuation.

At 68°F, the beer already holds about 0.86 volumes of residual CO2, so priming needs to add the remaining 1.54 volumes. That works out to 116.3 grams (about 4.1 ounces) of corn sugar for the full 5-gallon batch — a typical amount for a standard American ale.
