## Glycemic Index (GI) vs. Glycemic Load (GL)

Many nutritional guides focus solely on **Glycemic Index (GI)**, which ranks carbohydrates on a scale of 0 to 100 based on how quickly they raise blood sugar compared to pure glucose. However, GI does not account for portion size.

**Glycemic Load (GL)** provides a more accurate picture by factoring in the amount of carbohydrates in a serving. ## The Mathematics of Meal Glycemic Load

Glycemic Load is calculated for each ingredient using the formula:

$$\text{Glycemic Load} = \frac{\text{Glycemic Index (GI)} \times \text{Net Carbs (g)}}{100}$$

For a complete meal, the total Glycemic Load is the sum of the glycemic loads of each food item:

$$\text{Total Meal GL} = \sum \text{GL}_{\text{item}}$$

We also calculate the weighted average Glycemic Index of the meal:

$$\text{Meal Average GI} = \frac{\sum (\text{GI}_{\text{item}} \times \text{Carbs}_{\text{item}})}{\sum \text{Carbs}_{\text{item}}}$$

A meal GL of $\le 10$ is classified as Low; $11$ to $19$ is Medium; and $\ge 20$ is High, indicating a significant likelihood of blood sugar spikes.

You can lower the glycemic load of a meal by swapping high-GI carbs for fiber-rich alternatives, reducing portion sizes, or pairing carbohydrates with proteins and healthy fats. ## How to Use This Calculator

Add each food item in your meal along with its net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) in grams and its Glycemic Index rating.

The calculator multiplies each item's GI by its net carbs and divides by 100 to get that item's glycemic load, then sums all items into a total meal GL and a carb-weighted average GI.

## Worked Example: Brown Rice, Apple, and Mixed Vegetables

Brown rice: 45g net carbs, GI 50. Apple: 15g net carbs, GI 38. Mixed vegetables: 8g net carbs, GI 15.

Individual glycemic loads: rice \((50 \times 45)/100 = 22.5\), apple \((38 \times 15)/100 = 5.7\), vegetables \((15 \times 8)/100 = 1.2\).

Total meal glycemic load: \(22.5 + 5.7 + 1.2 = 29.4\) — classified as **High Glycemic Load** (≥ 20), driven almost entirely by the brown rice portion.

Total net carbs: 68g. Weighted average GI: \((50\times45 + 38\times15 + 15\times8)/68 \approx 43.2\) — swapping the brown rice for a lower-GI grain like quinoa or barley would be the single biggest lever to bring this meal's GL down.
