## Quick Answer — Shipping Mode Matters More Than Distance

"Food miles" is a popular but often misleading shorthand — what actually determines transport emissions is the **shipping mode**, not just the distance traveled. This calculator uses representative emissions factors in grams of CO2 per tonne-kilometer: **ocean freight** is by far the most efficient at roughly **20 g/tonne-km**, **rail freight** around **35 g/tonne-km**, **truck freight** around **110 g/tonne-km**, and **air freight** around **1,130 g/tonne-km** — more than 50 times higher than sea shipping per unit of weight and distance.

This means a food item shipped a very long distance by sea can have a smaller transport footprint than the same item trucked a much shorter distance, and air-freighted produce (common for items that spoil quickly, like berries or fresh fish) carries an outsized emissions cost regardless of the actual mileage.

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter the food item's weight in pounds, the distance it traveled in miles, and its primary shipping mode. The calculator converts to tonnes and kilometers, then applies the mode-specific emissions factor.

**Worked example — air-freighted item:** 10 lbs of a perishable item flown 5,500 miles (a typical long-haul air freight route). Weight = 10 / 2,204.62 = 0.00454 tonnes. Distance = 5,500 × 1.60934 = 8,851 km. Emissions = 0.00454 × 8,851 × 1,130 (air factor) = **45,369 grams**, or about **100 lbs of CO2** — ten times the item's own weight in emissions, illustrating why air freight is the highest-impact shipping mode by a wide margin.

## A Second Example: Truck-Shipped Produce

20 lbs of produce trucked 1,600 miles (roughly a cross-country US trucking route). Weight = 20 / 2,204.62 = 0.00907 tonnes. Distance = 1,600 × 1.60934 = 2,575 km. Emissions = 0.00907 × 2,575 × 110 (truck factor) = **2,570 grams**, or about **5.7 lbs of CO2** — dramatically lower than the air-freight example despite similar weight, because truck freight's per-tonne-km factor is roughly one-tenth of air freight's, even though the truck traveled a comparable or longer relative distance for this comparison.

## Why Ocean Freight Is So Efficient

Cargo ships move enormous volumes of freight per trip relative to their fuel burn, which is why ocean freight's per-tonne-km emissions factor is so low despite typically covering the longest distances of any shipping mode (many imported foods cross an ocean). This is the core reason "local" isn't automatically lower-emissions than "imported" — a tomato trucked 200 miles from a heated greenhouse can have a larger footprint than one shipped 6,000 miles by sea from a naturally warm growing region, once you account for both transport and production emissions.

Air freight is reserved mainly for highly perishable items that can't survive a multi-week sea voyage — fresh berries, cut flowers, some fish and seafood — which is why those specific items tend to carry disproportionately high transport footprints relative to their weight.

## What This Calculator Doesn't Cover

Transport is typically a smaller slice of a food's total lifecycle footprint than production — farming method, fertilizer use, land use change, and (for animal products) methane emissions usually dominate a food's overall footprint far more than how far it traveled. A food-miles number alone shouldn't be read as "this food's total climate impact"; it's specifically the shipping leg.

This calculator also doesn't include "last mile" distribution from a regional warehouse to a store or your home, refrigeration energy during transport, or packaging emissions — all of which add to a food's real total footprint beyond the long-haul transport leg estimated here.
