## Measure how engaged your reached audience is

Calculate Engagement Rate by Reach (ERR) — the percentage of people who actually saw your post and chose to interact with it.

- Industry benchmark context

## What is Engagement Rate by Reach (ERR)?

Engagement Rate by Reach (ERR) measures the percentage of people who saw your content and then engaged with it — through likes, comments, shares, saves, or reactions. ERR (%) = (Total Engagements ÷ Post Reach) × 100.

ERR is more precise than follower-based engagement rate because it adjusts for actual distribution. A post with 10,000 followers, 2,000 reach, and 200 engagements has: Follower ER = 2%, ERR = 10%. The ERR tells you what fraction of people who actually saw the post chose to engage.

Compare ERR with [influencer engagement rate](/calculators/influencer-engagement-rate-calculator) (which uses followers) and [engagement rate by impressions (EMR)](/calculators/social-engagement-calculator) to understand your full social performance stack.

## ERR benchmarks by platform

On Instagram, ERR of 3–6% is considered average, 6–10% is good, and 10%+ is exceptional. Reels typically achieve higher ERR than static posts due to algorithmic amplification. Stories have lower ERR (1–3%) but high completion-rate visibility.

On LinkedIn, ERR of 2–5% is typical. Thought leadership posts, carousels, and polls tend to outperform promotional content. On TikTok, ERR of 5–15% is the norm, given the high-discovery nature of the For You Page feed.

On Facebook, organic reach has declined to 2–6% of followers, making ERR harder to track meaningfully. Paid reach on Facebook is more consistent for ERR benchmarking. Twitter/X sees ERR of 0.5–2% for organic posts.

## Why ERR matters more than follower count

A creator with 500,000 followers and 0.5% ERR generates 2,500 engagements. A creator with 50,000 followers and 8% ERR generates 4,000 engagements — more total engagement at one-tenth the audience size. ERR reveals content quality and audience fit.

For brands evaluating influencer partnerships, ERR is the primary signal of authentic audience connection. High follower count with low ERR often indicates purchased followers, misaligned content, or an audience that has stopped paying attention.

For organic social strategy, consistently high ERR signals that algorithms are distributing your content to warm audiences likely to respond. Declining ERR is an early warning that creative fatigue or relevance drift is setting in — time to refresh content strategy.

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter the unique reach (people who saw the post) and total engagements (likes, comments, shares, saves) for the same post or period. The calculator divides engagements by reach to return ERR as a percentage.

Track ERR post-by-post rather than as a single account-wide average — it reveals which specific content formats and topics your audience actually responds to.

## Worked Example: Instagram Reel

A Reel reaches 80,000 unique accounts and receives 2,400 total engagements. ERR = (2,400 / 80,000) × 100 = 3.0%.

That lands at the lower end of the "average" 3–6% Instagram benchmark range — solid, but with room to improve through stronger hooks, captions that prompt comments, or more save-worthy content.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between ERR and EMR?

ERR uses reach (unique viewers) as the denominator. EMR (Engagement Rate by Impressions) uses impressions (total views including repeat views) as the denominator. ERR is always higher than EMR because impressions ≥ reach.

### What counts as an engagement in ERR?

Platform-dependent. Generally: likes, comments, shares, saves, reactions, replies, and link clicks. Some definitions include profile visits and story taps. Be consistent in your definition when benchmarking over time.

### Does paid reach count in ERR?

For organic benchmarking, exclude paid reach. Report ERR for organic reach separately from boosted/paid reach, as paid amplification typically generates lower ERR from cold audiences.

### Why might my reach be high but ERR very low?

Your content is being distributed beyond your core engaged audience — to people who don't resonate with it. This happens when viral distribution reaches tangential audiences, when boosted reach targets cold demographics, or when trending audio inflates Reels reach.

### How do I improve ERR?

Post content that earns saves and shares (how-to, lists, frameworks). Ask genuine questions that prompt comments. Use native formats (Reels, Carousels) that platforms prioritize. Post at optimal times for your specific audience using platform analytics.

### Can ERR be gamed?

Artificially inflated through engagement pods (groups that systematically like/comment each other's content) or purchased engagement. These inflate ERR without reflecting genuine audience interest and risk account penalties on most platforms.

### Is a high ERR always good for a brand?

High ERR from negative sentiment (controversy, complaints) is not beneficial. Always review the quality and sentiment of engagements, not just the quantity. Comment sentiment analysis tools help distinguish positive ERR from negative ERR.

### What ERR should an influencer campaign target?

Micro-influencers (10K–100K): target 5%+ ERR. Macro-influencers (100K–1M): 2–4% ERR is competitive. Mega-influencers (1M+): 1–2% ERR is typical due to audience dilution at scale.

### Does posting frequency affect ERR?

Yes. Over-posting dilutes engagement per post, reducing ERR. Under-posting can reduce algorithmic reach over time. Most accounts find a 3–5 posts/week cadence optimal for sustained ERR on Instagram; TikTok benefits from higher frequency.

### How does Reels vs. static posts compare on ERR?

Reels on Instagram typically generate 2–3× higher ERR than static posts due to algorithmic distribution to non-followers. However, saves (a high-value engagement signal) tend to be higher on carousel posts.

### What is a good ERR for a brand account vs. a creator?

Brand accounts typically achieve 1–3% ERR (audiences expect promotional content, not casual conversation). Creator accounts can achieve 3–10%+ ERR with authentic, personality-driven content.

### Should I include Story views in reach for ERR?

Report Story ERR separately from Feed ERR. Stories have different reach mechanics (primarily shown to followers) and different engagement types (taps, reactions, replies), making cross-format comparison misleading.
