## Seismic Magnitude Scales and Energy Math

Earthquake magnitude scales like Richter and Moment Magnitude are logarithmic. A common misunderstanding is that a magnitude 7 earthquake is slightly stronger than a magnitude 6. Mathematically, each whole number increase on the magnitude scale corresponds to 10 times greater ground motion amplitude and approximately 31.6 times more energy release.

The energy calculation uses the standard seismic energy-magnitude equation:

This exponential growth explains why high-magnitude earthquakes release catastrophic amounts of energy compared to moderate ones.

## Pinpointing Epicenter Distance Using Seismic Waves

When an earthquake occurs, it releases body waves: fast primary compression waves (P-waves) and slower secondary shear waves (S-waves). Because they travel at different speeds through the Earth's crust, the time delay between their arrivals at a seismograph station increases with distance.

By measuring this time delay (P-S delay), we can calculate the distance to the earthquake epicenter. Standard crustal velocities average 6.0 km/s for P-waves and 3.5 km/s for S-waves, yielding an epicenter distance multiplier of approximately 8.4 kilometers per second of delay.

## Estimating Ground Motion Intensity and Damage

While magnitude measures the energy released at the earthquake source, intensity measures the shaking and damage observed at a specific location. Ground motion decays as seismic waves travel away from the focus.

We model Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) using ground motion prediction equations that factor in magnitude, epicentral distance, focal depth, and soil amplification. Stiff and soft soils amplify seismic waves compared to solid rock, significantly increasing shaking severity and structural damage risk.

## How to Use This Calculator

Energy compares two magnitudes and shows how much stronger one earthquake's energy release and ground amplitude are relative to the other. Distance takes the P-S wave arrival delay (in seconds) from a seismogram and estimates how far away the epicenter was. Intensity takes a magnitude, distance, soil type, and focal depth to estimate the shaking severity (Modified Mercalli Intensity) at a given location.

## Worked Example: Comparing a Magnitude 6.0 and 5.0 Earthquake

On the Energy tab with the default inputs (magnitude 6.0 vs. 5.0), the magnitude 6.0 event releases about 6.31 × 10¹³ joules of energy — roughly 15,080 tons of TNT equivalent. Compared to the magnitude 5.0 event, that is an energy ratio of 31.6x and a ground-motion amplitude ratio of 10x, confirming the rule that each whole-number magnitude step multiplies energy by about 31.6.

On the Distance tab, a 10-second P-S wave delay at standard crustal velocities (6.0 km/s and 3.5 km/s) works out to an epicenter roughly 84 km away. On the Intensity tab, a magnitude 6.5 quake at 30 km distance, 10 km focal depth, on rock produces a Peak Ground Acceleration of about 1.13%g — Modified Mercalli Intensity IV ("Light"), meaning it would be felt indoors but cause little to no damage.
