## Quick Answer — How Is a Domain Name Valued?

A domain is worth what a comparable name recently sold for, adjusted for how it scores against that comparable. This calculator makes that explicit: \(\text{Estimated Value} = \text{Comparable Sale Price} \times \frac{\text{Quality Score}}{50}\), where the quality score is a weighted average of six factors — extension (25%), length (20%), name type (20%), commercial demand (15%), clean characters (10%), and age (10%), each scored 0 to 100.

A score of 50 means the domain looks like the comparable and should be worth about the same. A score of 100 means roughly twice it; a score of 25, roughly half. The output is deliberately a range — the point estimate ±40% — because appraisals of the same name from different tools routinely disagree by more than that.

How the individual factors score, at a glance:

What this model deliberately does not do is invent a comparable for you. Automated appraisal tools hide that assumption inside a proprietary score; here it is an input you have to justify.

## How to Use This Estimator: A Strong Commercial .com

Take a twelve-character exact-match keyword .com with no hyphens or digits, registered twelve years ago, on a term with 40,000 monthly searches at a $6.50 cost-per-click, benchmarked against a comparable name that sold for $25,000.

Length = (20 − 12) ÷ 17 × 100 = **47.1**. Extension = **100**. Name type = **100**. Clean characters = **100**. Age = 12 ÷ 15 × 100 = **80.0**. Commercial demand = 40,000 × $6.50 × 12 = $3,120,000 of annual click value, far past the $60,000 saturation point, so **100**.

Quality Score = (47.1 × 20% ) + (100 × 25%) + (100 × 20%) + (100 × 10%) + (80 × 10%) + (100 × 15%) = **87.4 / 100**. Valuation Multiple = 87.4 ÷ 50 = **1.75×**. Estimated Value = $25,000 × 1.75 = **$43,706**, with a negotiating range of **$26,224 to $61,188**.

Notice which factor is holding the score down. Everything except length is at or near maximum; twelve characters costs this name more than twenty points of quality score. That is the single most useful thing an auditable model tells you and an opaque one does not.

## A Second Example: A Weak Name at the Other End of the Scale

Now take a fourteen-character two-word compound on .net, containing both a hyphen and a digit, registered two years ago, on a term with 500 monthly searches at a $1.20 cost-per-click, benchmarked against a $2,500 comparable.

Length = (20 − 14) ÷ 17 × 100 = **35.3**. Extension = **55**. Name type = **60**. Clean characters = **20**. Age = 2 ÷ 15 × 100 = **13.3**. Commercial demand = 500 × $1.20 × 12 = $7,200 of annual click value, which is 12% of the $60,000 ceiling, so **12.0**.

Quality Score = **37.9 / 100**, a multiple of **0.76×**, giving an estimated value of **$1,897** in a range of **$1,138 to $2,656** — below its own comparable, despite the comparable already being a modest sale. Two inputs do most of that damage: the hyphen-and-digit penalty and the near-zero commercial demand. Drop the hyphen and the digit alone and the score rises by eight points, which is a concrete argument for buying the clean variant instead.

## Why a Range, and Why the Comparable Matters More Than the Score

Domain valuation has no observable market price. Unlike a stock or a house on a street of near-identical houses, most names trade once, privately, to a buyer with an idiosyncratic reason for wanting that exact string. The ±40% band is there for the same reason. Treat the low end as roughly where a motivated seller lands and the high end as roughly what an end-user buyer with a specific need might pay, and treat any single point inside it as a starting position rather than a price.

## Limitations

This is a ranking model, not a market price. It performs exact arithmetic on the factors and weights shown, but those weights are a documented editorial judgement about what the aftermarket rewards — they are not fitted to a sales database, and no automated model can capture the reason most premium domains actually sell, which is that one specific buyer needed that specific string.

It also cannot see several things that decisively move real prices: trademark exposure (a name that infringes a mark is worth less than nothing, since it invites a UDRP transfer), existing traffic and backlink profile, prior use for spam that has left the domain penalised, renewal cost on premium extensions, escrow and transfer fees, and how long you can afford to hold the name before selling. Check a trademark database before buying, and never let a calculator talk you past that step.

Finally, the commercial demand factor uses search volume and CPC as a proxy for value.
