## Calculate cost per click and conversion efficiency

Estimate CPC, conversion rate, and cost per conversion from spend, clicks, and completed actions.

- Cost per click
- Click-to-conversion rate
- Cost per conversion

## CPC is a traffic acquisition metric, not a profit metric

Cost per click measures how expensive it is to buy traffic. It is one of the most common paid media metrics because platforms like Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, and many retail media systems bill or benchmark performance around clicks. But CPC only measures traffic acquisition cost. It does not tell you whether the traffic converted or whether the campaign was profitable.

To understand the true efficiency of your paid traffic, you must combine CPC with downstream funnel metrics. Use our [CPM calculator](/calculators/cpm-calculator) to analyze impressions-based buying, and monitor return on ad spend with the [ROAS to ROI calculator](/calculators/roas-to-roi-cogs-calculator).

## The CPC and CPA formulas

The core equations are:

$$\text{CPC} = \frac{\text{Spend}}{\text{Clicks}}$$

$$\text{CTR (\%)} = \frac{\text{Clicks}}{\text{Impressions}} \times 100$$

$$\text{Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)} = \frac{\text{Spend}}{\text{Conversions}}$$

These formulas should be read together. A low CPC is only commercially valuable if the traffic converted at a healthy rate. If clicks are cheap but do not convert, your CPA will balloon. Benchmark your campaign targets with the [marketing CPA calculator](/calculators/marketing-cpa-calculator).

## Why cheap clicks can still be expensive

A campaign with a $0.50 CPC may look superior to a campaign with a $2.00 CPC. But if the cheaper clicks convert at 0.5% and the expensive clicks convert at 8%, the apparent bargain becomes a loss-maker. CPC must always be contextualized with landing-page quality, conversion tracking, and downstream revenue. Track this relationship with the [sales funnel conversion rate calculator](/calculators/sales-conversion-rate-calculator).

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter total campaign spend, impressions, clicks, and conversions for the same reporting period. The calculator divides spend by clicks for CPC, clicks by impressions for CTR, and spend by conversions for cost per conversion (CPA) — giving you traffic cost and funnel efficiency side by side.

Watch CPC and cost-per-conversion together, not in isolation: a rising CPC with a stable or falling CPA is often fine, but a falling CPC with a rising CPA means your traffic quality is dropping even though it looks cheaper on paper.

## Worked Example: Search Campaign

A campaign spends $500 to generate 50,000 impressions, 250 clicks, and 20 conversions. CTR = (250 / 50,000) × 100 = 0.5%. CPC = $500 / 250 = $2.00.

Cost per conversion = $500 / 20 = $25.00, and the click-to-conversion rate = (20 / 250) × 100 = 8%. A $2 CPC paired with an 8% conversion rate and a $25 CPA gives a clear, comparable efficiency picture for budgeting the next period.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is CPC?

CPC stands for cost per click and measures average ad spend divided by total clicks.

### How do I calculate CPC?

Divide total spend by total clicks.

### Is a lower CPC always better?

No. Lower CPC only matters if the clicks are high quality and convert profitably.

### What is cost per conversion?

It is total spend divided by total conversions, showing how expensive each completed action is.

### Why include conversion rate in a CPC calculator?

Because CPC alone does not reveal traffic quality or funnel efficiency.

### What if clicks are zero?

Then CPC is undefined in practice, and the calculator safely returns zero instead of dividing by zero.

### Can CPC be used for SEO?

Not directly. CPC is a paid media metric, though it can inform organic keyword commercial value estimates.

### How does landing-page quality affect CPC outcomes?

A poor landing page can waste even low-cost traffic by producing weak conversion rates.

### Should I compare CPC across platforms?

Yes, but only with caution. Different platforms serve different intent levels and therefore different expected CPC ranges.

### What metric should I pair with CPC?

Pair it with conversion rate and cost per conversion at minimum, and ideally with ROAS or ROI.

### What is the difference between CPC and CPA?

CPC is what you pay per click; CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) is what you pay per final conversion.

### How does ad relevance score affect CPC?

Platforms like Google and Meta reward highly relevant ads with lower CPC pricing.
