Enter your average monthly electricity (kWh) and natural gas (therms) use, your annual driving mileage and vehicle fuel economy, the number of short and long flights you take per year, and your household recycling rate. The calculator converts each category into pounds of CO2e using standard EPA-style emissions factors, then totals them into an annual footprint in metric tons.

## Worked Example: A Typical Household Footprint

At 500 kWh of monthly electricity, 30 therms of monthly gas, 12,000 miles a year at 25 MPG, 2 short flights, 1 long flight, and a 50% recycling rate: electricity contributes about 5,142 lbs of CO2e per year, natural gas about 4,212 lbs, driving about 9,408 lbs, and flights 4,000 lbs, with waste-related emissions of roughly 345 lbs.

That totals about 23,107 lbs, or roughly 10.48 metric tons of CO2e annually — with vehicle emissions the single largest category in this example, which is where a reduction strategy would have the most leverage.
