## Why bodyweight ratio, not a fixed number

A 100 kg bench press means something very different for someone weighing 60 kg than for someone weighing 120 kg. Strength standards commonly used in powerlifting and general strength training express lifts as a ratio of bodyweight (lift weight ÷ bodyweight) specifically so lifters of different sizes can compare progress on the same scale, rather than everyone chasing the same absolute number regardless of how much they weigh.

## The five tiers and what they represent

Commonly cited bodyweight-ratio benchmarks for men place Beginner around 0.5× bodyweight, Novice around 0.75×, Intermediate around 1.0× (bodyweight for reps is a widely used general fitness milestone), Advanced around 1.5×, and Elite around 2.0× or higher. ## What these tiers don't capture

Bodyweight-ratio standards are a rough population-level benchmark, not a precise measure of an individual's genetic potential, technique, or training history. Limb length, training age, bodyweight class strategy (some lifters cut weight before a ratio comparison), and injury history all affect where someone lands without reflecting their actual capability or effort. Use these tiers as a general reference point for programming and goal-setting, not as a definitive judgment of strength.
