## Wattage is power, not energy

Appliance labels usually show power draw in watts, but utility bills charge for energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The bridge between the two is time. A high-wattage appliance used briefly may cost less than a moderate appliance used continuously. This is why energy cost estimation must combine wattage with usage duration.

## The appliance energy formulas

The daily electrical energy use is:

$$\text{Daily kWh} = \frac{\text{Wattage} \times \text{Hours per Day}}{1000}$$

Monthly and annual costs follow by multiplying energy use by time and the utility rate:

## Why standby and always-on loads matter

Some appliances consume little power but run continuously. Refrigerators, routers, freezers, standby electronics, and circulation pumps often become meaningful contributors precisely because they operate many hours per day. Time multiplies modest wattage into large annual energy use.

## Worked Example: 1,000W Appliance, 4 Hours a Day

A 1,000-watt appliance run for 4 hours a day uses (1,000 × 4) / 1,000 = 4 kWh per day. Over 30.4 average days, that is 121.6 kWh per month.
