## Analyze Ad Frequency and Fatigue Decay

Compute ad display frequency and simulate the decay of click-through rates (CTR) to plan campaign rotation timelines.

- Calculate average ad frequency
- Estimate ad fatigue decay rates
- Plan timely ad creative rotations

## Ad Frequency and the Friction of Ad Fatigue

In paid media campaigns (like Meta Ads or YouTube campaigns), ad frequency is the average number of times an individual sees your ad over a specific period. While initial exposure builds awareness, excessive display leads to ad fatigue.

Ad fatigue occurs when users see the same ad creative so many times that they start ignoring it or get annoyed. This causes click-through rates (CTR) to drop and cost-per-click (CPC) rates to climb. Monitoring frequency helps media buyers rotate creative before campaigns become unprofitable.

## Ad Frequency and Fatigue Decay Mathematics

Frequency is calculated by dividing total impressions by unique reach:

$$\text{Frequency} = \frac{\text{Total Impressions}}{\text{Unique Reach}}$$

Ad fatigue decay simulates performance drop-off. A common empirical model estimates fatigue factor once frequency passes a baseline threshold (e.g. 3.0 impressions per person):

$$\text{Fatigue Factor (\%)} = \min\left(100, \max\left(0, (\text{Frequency} - 3.0) \times 15\right)\right)$$

$$\text{Adjusted CTR} = \text{Original CTR} \times \left(1 - \frac{\text{Fatigue Factor}}{100}\right)$$

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter total campaign impressions, unique reach, and your baseline (original) CTR. The calculator divides impressions by reach to get frequency, applies a fatigue penalty once frequency passes 3.0x, and shows the resulting fatigue-adjusted CTR you should expect at that exposure level.

Check this weekly for always-on campaigns with a fixed audience. Rising frequency with flat or shrinking reach is the earliest signal that it is time to refresh creative or expand targeting before performance visibly drops.

## Worked Example: Retargeting Campaign

A retargeting campaign delivers 25,000 impressions to a unique reach of 8,000 people, with a historical CTR of 2.5%. Frequency = 25,000 / 8,000 = 3.125x.

Since frequency (3.125) is just above the 3.0x threshold, Fatigue Factor = (3.125 − 3.0) × 15 = 1.875%. Adjusted CTR = 2.5% × (1 − 0.01875) = 2.45%.

At this frequency the fatigue effect is still minor — a small dip from 2.5% to about 2.45%. If frequency climbed to 5x on the same audience, the fatigue factor would jump to 30% and adjusted CTR would fall to roughly 1.75%, a clear signal to rotate creative or widen the audience.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is ad frequency?

The average number of times an individual has seen your ad over a set campaign duration.

### What is a healthy ad frequency level?

Aim to keep weekly ad frequency between 1.5x and 3x. Ratios above 4x often signal ad fatigue.

### What is ad fatigue?

A decline in ad performance (low CTR, high CPA) caused by targeting the same audience with the same creative repeatedly.

### How do I fix ad fatigue?

Fix it by rotating new ad creative, expanding target audience parameters, or pausing campaigns for a cool-down period.

### Does ad frequency affect ad cost?

Yes, high frequency leads to lower CTR, which ad platforms penalize with lower quality scores and higher CPC rates.

### What is creative rotation?

The strategy of swapping out ad images, headlines, or video assets every 2 to 4 weeks to keep campaigns fresh.

### Does ad fatigue happen faster in small audiences?

Yes, small, narrow target groups saturate quickly, causing frequency and fatigue to rise rapidly.

### What is reach in ad campaigns?

The count of unique individual users who have viewed your ad at least once.

### Can I set frequency caps?

Yes, platforms like Google Display Network allow you to set caps to limit impressions per user per day/week.

### How does CTR relate to ad frequency?

As frequency increases beyond threshold limits, CTR typically decays in an inverse relationship.
