## What is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?

Click-Through Rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who saw your ad and clicked on it. It's one of the most fundamental metrics in digital advertising, measured as: CTR (%) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100.

A 2,500-click campaign from 100,000 impressions yields a CTR of 2.5%. In Google Search, average CTRs range from 3–5% for top positions; on display networks and social feeds, 0.1–1.5% is considered normal. Knowing whether your CTR is above or below benchmark tells you how compelling your headline, creative, and offer are.

High CTR on a low-quality landing page wastes budget — it must be read alongside your [landing page conversion rate](/calculators/landing-page-conversion-calculator) and [cost per lead](/calculators/cost-per-lead-cpl-calculator) to tell the full story.

## Cost Per Click (CPC) and Cost Per Mille (CPM) explained

CPC measures efficiency of your spend: CPC ($) = Total Spend ÷ Total Clicks. A $1,500 budget generating 2,500 clicks yields a CPC of $0.60 — meaning each visitor cost 60 cents to acquire. CPM ($) = (Spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000. At $1,500 and 100,000 impressions, CPM = $15.

When running awareness campaigns (brand, video, display), CPM is the primary metric. When optimizing for direct response (lead generation, e-commerce), CPC and [CPA](/calculators/marketing-cpa-calculator) are more relevant. Use both alongside [ROAS](/calculators/return-on-ad-spend-calculator) to judge the full picture.

Platforms like Google Ads and Meta use different auction models. In CPM auctions, you pay per thousand impressions regardless of clicks. In CPC auctions, you only pay when someone clicks. Understanding which model you are on is critical before interpreting your numbers.

## Worked example: Google Search campaign

A SaaS company runs a branded keyword campaign: 50,000 impressions, 3,200 clicks, $1,920 total spend. CTR = (3,200 / 50,000) × 100 = 6.4%. CPC = $1,920 / 3,200 = $0.60. CPM = ($1,920 / 50,000) × 1,000 = $38.40.

The 6.4% CTR is well above the Google Search average of ~3.5%, suggesting strong ad copy or high branded intent. The $0.60 CPC is excellent for a SaaS keyword. If 5% of these 3,200 clicks convert at a $50 lead value, total conversion value = 160 × $50 = $8,000 vs. $1,920 spend — a solid [marketing ROI](/calculators/marketing-roi-calculator).

If CTR suddenly dropped from 6.4% to 2%, that would signal creative fatigue, increased competition, or a quality score drop. Pair with [ad frequency fatigue](/calculators/ad-frequency-fatigue-calculator) data when running social campaigns.

## CTR optimization strategies

The fastest wins in CTR improvement come from headlines, ad extensions, and targeting refinements. On Google Search: test 3+ headline variants per ad group, use all available extensions (sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets), and tighten match types to reduce irrelevant impressions.

On Meta and social: the first 3 seconds of video creative determine whether users pause or scroll. Static image ads benefit most from high-contrast visuals and a single clear CTA. A/B test hooks, not entire ads — isolate variables with the [A/B test significance calculator](/calculators/ab-test-significance-calculator).

Negative keywords are the most underused CTR lever on Search. Removing irrelevant impression triggers immediately raises CTR without changing a single ad. Combine this with audience exclusions on Performance Max and Discovery campaigns.

## How to Use This Calculator

Enter total impressions, total clicks, and total ad spend for a campaign, ad set, or account over any date range. The calculator divides clicks by impressions for CTR, spend by clicks for CPC, and spend by impressions (×1,000) for CPM — the three core efficiency metrics every paid channel reports.

Run the same inputs weekly to spot trend shifts early: a falling CTR alongside a rising CPC on unchanged targeting is the clearest early warning sign of ad or audience fatigue.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good CTR for Google Search?

For branded keywords, 5–15% is typical. For non-branded, 1–5% is competitive. Position 1 ads often achieve 3.5–10% CTR. Anything below 1% on Search suggests poor ad-keyword relevance or weak copy.

### What is a good CTR for Facebook/Meta ads?

Meta display ads average 0.9–1.2% CTR. Video ads typically see higher engagement rates. Link CTR (all-clicks to destination) above 1.5% is considered strong for cold traffic.

### How does Quality Score affect CPC?

Google's Quality Score (1–10) adjusts the effective CPC in auction. A QS of 10 can reduce CPC by ~50% vs. a QS of 1 for the same position. Improve QS by increasing CTR, landing page relevance, and ad copy relevance.

### Should I optimize for CPC or CPM?

Use CPC bidding for direct response goals (leads, sales, installs). Use CPM bidding for awareness and reach campaigns where impression volume matters more than individual clicks.

### Why is my CTR high but conversions are low?

High CTR + low conversion rate = landing page problem. Your ad copy is promising something your page doesn't deliver, or the page UX is poor. Check your [landing page conversion rate](/calculators/landing-page-conversion-calculator) and align messaging.

### What causes CPM to spike?

CPM rises due to increased auction competition (seasonal events like Black Friday), narrower audience targeting, or placement changes. Running on premium placements (Instagram Stories vs. Audience Network) significantly raises CPM.

### How do I calculate impressions if I only know spend and CPM?

Impressions = (Spend ÷ CPM) × 1,000. If you spent $2,000 at a $20 CPM, you received 100,000 impressions.

### What is viewable CPM (vCPM)?

vCPM only counts impressions where the ad was 50%+ visible for at least 1 second (display) or 2 seconds (video). It's a higher-quality metric than gross CPM, as it filters out below-the-fold placements.

### How does ad scheduling affect CTR?

CTR varies significantly by time-of-day and day-of-week. B2B ads typically see higher CTR on Tuesday–Thursday between 9am–5pm. Use dayparting bid adjustments to concentrate spend in high-CTR windows.

### Does a higher CTR always mean better results?

Not necessarily. A curiosity-bait headline may drive high CTR but attract low-intent users who don't convert. Always evaluate CTR alongside CPC, conversion rate, and [CPA](/calculators/marketing-cpa-calculator) together.

### What is interaction rate vs. CTR on video ads?

Interaction rate includes any click (including skip-ad buttons, channel clicks, etc.) whereas CTR on video typically refers to clicks that go to the destination URL. Use view-through rates and [video completion rates](/calculators/video-view-completion-calculator) for video performance.

### What impression volume do I need for statistically valid CTR data?

For a 2% expected CTR with ±0.5% margin of error at 95% confidence, you need approximately 3,000+ impressions. Use the [A/B test significance calculator](/calculators/ab-test-significance-calculator) to determine when data is meaningful.
