## Fixture Ratings: GPM, GPF, and WaterSense

EPA WaterSense provides useful reference points for fixture upgrades. WaterSense labeled showerheads use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute. WaterSense labeled residential toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush or less while meeting performance criteria. Bathroom sink faucets and accessories with the WaterSense label use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute.

## Choosing the Right Water Rate

Water bills can be harder to translate than electric bills because utilities may bill in gallons, hundred cubic feet, thousand gallons, or separate water and sewer charges. For a simple fixture estimate, divide the variable part of the bill by the gallons used. If sewer charges fall when water use falls, you can include those volume-based charges in the rate scenario.

- Use the rate from your utility bill if it provides a per-gallon or per-thousand-gallon charge.
- If the bill uses CCF, remember that 1 CCF is about 748 gallons.
- Exclude fixed customer charges if they will not change when you save water.
- Run separate scenarios for water-only and water-plus-sewer savings if your utility bill separates them.
- Check local rebates before buying fixtures; rebate value is not included in the DTC calculator result.
